P. Gymnothorax Update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Amazing animals. I never knew there was a species of moray that could live its entire life in fresh water. I definitely want one. Do you think they would get along with rays? I have a show tank that I would love to add one to but the eel would have to put some size on before I could add him. Any additional information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Alan(DB Junkie) tried it.

Hi,

How long was your 19" eel when you first got it, and how long did it take to reach this length?

I also have three of these eels as well, do you have any aggression issues? I originally had only one, but I introduced two new ones recently. The original one keeps trying to death roll one of the two new ones whenever he can.

Thanks.

Hello there. I got mine around 10" just over a year ago. I feed them 1-2 times per day. The eat just about anything they can smell. I do get very mild aggression from my middle size one but it will usually stop with no damage done.

These are 100% freshwater. FUGUPUFF (vendor) has some info in his F/S section. I am not sure the max size but was told 3-4' and the biggest ones I've seen are about 26-28" and very thick, look AMAZING in person! I wouldn't put these guys with rays until they reach 24" at min. Even at 19" its pretty thin but I can see the girth starting to show.
My only advice for these, is to give them a nice slow acclimation into its new home. I had one melt on me and yes melt. It got very bright and started secreting slime over its body. In a matter of 5 min it was stuck to the bottom of the glass tank. This only happened to the first of 4 pcs and never had the problem since. So many reasons as to why but I think it was the initial acclimation time.

Beautiful! How big do these get? Would they do well with rays and or other eels (fire or tire track)?

I think they would be fine if you raised it for a couple years. These guys don't seem very needy as far as tank size. They don't seem to require large tanks to keep them, basically like how snakes are in small enclosures. I have not read a thread about someone loosing one btw so I think its fair to say they are a very hardy species.

for the first 6 months or so I was up on weekly water changes, since then I do 1 water change a month. Been very busy and I have added more fish.

Very nice thread, I just picked three of these guys up from Wes and they arrived today, they seemed to have settled in nicely, they are a little over 12" long and a little thicker than a pencil. I have tried feeding them pellets and some earth worms but no luck yet, they are still getting settled. Going to power feed these guys so hopefully they cam put on some size and girth, I need them to be 24" to go I to the show tank. I can't wait to watch them grow.

Nice give them time to settle in and preferably coral sand too. Me and a buddy got one each and mine jumped out on the 4th day of me owning it even tho I had a lid with a tiny crack in it. My buddy has his with coral sand and his smashes hikari sinking carni pellets... So sad mine died lol keep a tight lid and his didn't start eating till 4-5 days after he got it so give em some time

This is a great, helpful resource. I bought 2x12" Gymnothorax P as well about 3weeks ago. I have seen them eat cut market shrimp and red wigglers. Haven't seen them eat pellets. They are very shy, prob cuz I have lots of driftwood to hide, and they live in a community of 21 clown loaches (2"-10".) I hope they start swimming about more often but I don't wanna remove the hiding places as the loaches and my L25 sleep there.

Hmm, I've tried feeding them with massivore/NLS before. They don't even look at it.

Mine have been in the tank for about 30 hours now. I put I. Some cut up earth worms last night and I didn't see them eat any but they were gone in the morning. I put some cut up shiners in this afternoon and I didn't see them eat any again but they were smelling it. They are very cool fish, I can't wait for them to get settled in.

Still swimming like mad. I added some med CL (6-7") and my water has been cloudy ever since. I need to get rid of them lol

Morays are eating massivore, nls, cichlid gold and algae wafers. Love these dudes :)
