Its pretty well impossible to keep low light, live plants and large fish all happy at the same time since the plants wont develop that great of root structure quick enough before the piranha run into it and knock it loose.

I had snails but they started eating massive holes in all my plants so I bought loaches to get rid of them. Now the loaches eat the remains of whatever meat products the p's miss so its pretty cool.

I ended up swapping up from 1 36 inch bulb to 2 48 inch T5 bulbs. The fish hate it but it really shows off the colors they have and its done wonders for the plants that now thrive even with the piranha bullying them. I get some really morbid alge growth now but the extra hour a week to clean it all up is well worth the plants IMO. I tried a pleco but it became food rather quick. Really dont get it when they leave the other fish alone.

it really sounds like a pain, prob jsut going to do the plastic plants they look pretty good and really no upkeep. currently i have 3 Cariba Piranha

in a 75g, do you recommend i add any oter fish, keep it the way it is, or add another piranha?

u can get a huge pleco though. my piranhas are about .5 inches to 1 inch and my pleco is 10inches and it will grow with them. depending on the tank your pleco could be alot bigger then the ranhas so they may or may not eat it. i would take the risk

3 Piranha is really all you want to add for the simple fact of they are quite mean to eachother. It seems like a lot of space when they are small but they will quickly grow into it. I have 5 in 125 gal and it seems over crowded more often then under crowded. You could try other fish but without lots of hiding spots and luck its really hit and miss. Take a look at the questionable tank mates sticky.

The only difference will be that the females will be slightly thicker on their belly when they get to a mature size. Thats also assuming though they didn't just eat really well...

I didn't sign up for any snails I got eggs on some plants I brought home. I'm digging my loaches though, I had only known about clowns before I did some research.

I got about a 10 inch common pleco in my 125 and my p's have never nipped at him, I also got a raphael catfish that has never been touched by my p's, I do keep my p's well fed though. Both have been in there about a year and half. Each case is different though.

off topic, but were u at in MN?

Theres lots of ppl who use live plants and have large P's myself included. I clean up the plants by removing dead or dying leaves. Java ferns, Java Moss, Xmas moss, Anubius are a few low light low maintence plants that work well with no additives. They grow on driftwood and holey rocks. Start by tying them to the object with fishing line. Larger plants like Amazon Spears, Lotus Lillies, and Wendetii are a few that need a little more light but need no additives. Live Plants don't equal obnoxious algae outbreaks. Algae's can happen pretty much everytime you mix sunlight, water, and protien. The trick is limiting or eliminating the direct sunlight, replacing your bulbs annually, Good clean fresh oxygenated water, and cleaning up any uneaten food as well as poop and dead leaves. You can have plastic plants and still get tons of algae with improper maintence.

Go with plastic. Zebra Nerite snails are my favorite for algae removal, but piranhas will definitely tear through a newly planted tank. If you had a very well established amazon sword in the tank with an insane root structure it could handle the p's.

What substrate do you have?
