Pacu Dilemma

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
KLD - One thing I would say is that despite the mistakes and all I think its actually really sweet you wanted to "rescue" the fish. Sorry it didn't work out the way you had planned.

I'm also very new to keeping fish and constantly feel like I'm doing things "wrong". But I suppose time and experience is just something we have to be patient with.

Glad to see everything worked out for you and your fish. It's not very often that a person will do the right thing with oversized fish. Many people don't see fish as true pets, like a dog or a cat. They don't feel the need to take care of the fish properly cause, after all it's only a fish to them, not a pet. so Kudos to you, you're a good person.

Start looking through the forums, browse all of the photo lounge threads and such, find some smaller cichlids and stuff and let's get you started on this hobby. Be forewarned, one 55g will quickly turn into the desire for several tanks over 100 gallons plus and indoor and outdoor pond, it's addicting!!

Thats why MFK is here! This place has tons of great information and there is always someone willing to help out a fellow hobbyist. Just be patient and if you're unsure, ask! We were all beginners at some point, there are many wise individuals on here, much much wiser than I, who love to help!

if your looking for small, colorful community fish, look at the different types of tetras like bleeding heart, neon, x-ray, black skirt, or blind cave fish, giant danios, glo-light fish, platies, mollies......you honest to god have hundreds of combos for nice small fish, some of which like tetras will school together.

personally for community, i like the different variations of gourami. they come in so many different colors, have beautiful fins, and will be more than happy in a 55g.

If you are looking for a few shoals RAINBOWFISH could be very good in your tank!

You could get

4 x Red Rainbows
12 x Preacox Rainbows
4 x Bosemani Rainbows
4 x Lake Kutubu
12 x Corydoras Adolfi

None of there fish get to 15 cm most staying around the 10 cm mark. All are good peaceful fish but wath the red,Lake kutubu and Bosemani rainbowfish as theyu would eat fish -3 cm so all of the listed fish would be safe and happy! You could do an oddball tank with loads of fascinating individuals but it depends what you are interested in!

This is great! Thanks for all of the kind words. We did really try to help the fish. We have many pets here, all of which rescued, so it just comes naturally that the fish would be rescued, too!

I'm so excited to get started on the fish! Thank you for all of the information. I'll never turn it down!

Does anyone feel like telling me about re-cycling my tank? I thought I'd fill it Sunday, & start the filters back up & heaters, add the salt, & stress zyme. We were told after a few days of that the tank would be ready. It has come to my attention that there is a cycling process that can last a month or two...what am I missing? Thanks!
