Pacu nipping????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah i agree tank size is a factor i got him a week ago so right now hes in the temp holding/quarintine tank its only 10 gal but by wensday he,ll be in the 75 gallon with and so will the two fire mouths

Ok, that makes sense then. I've always kept mine in large tanks and they currently reside in a 750g.

wow just wondering a 75 gal will be fine for one right until my wolf dies not many fish can handle the 150 hes a killer

I am assuming it is in a 10 gal because it is still a little tiny baby..?? PACU grow super fast..............
75gal is not going to be okay for one pacu.. sorry but i don't think you realize how huge your pacu is going to be..i have two pacu in a 220 gal and it is not enough room.. they are comfortable and because they are the only two fish {except for little cichlid} they can swim and stretch out but it is not ideal.. mainly because they splash water everywhere when they start having fun and theres always the possibility that they could even break the glass.. did the lfs tell you how big a pacu gets.. you know the turkey platter your mom might use at thanksgiving to hold a turkey.. well that is how big your pacu is going to get.. so it would not be in the 150gal for very long before you would need to move to an even larger tank ..I just want you to know what lies ahead for you.. and unfortunatly for your pacu... :( one more thing i just realized.. this thread is in the cichlid section but pacu are not cichlid ...lol

It is a 220gal.. not over stocked... 2 pacu and one african cichlid.. they are fine and happy and 9 years old.. better off totally then all the pacu that people are getting "rid" of.. but i have already ordered a 500gal for them and it is on it's way ...the 500 gal will not really make that much difference .. but i want to add another fish... i think people who post with a flaming attitude should at least ask about it with out judging..and there is a nice way to say things..

sorry but i thought it was a black pacu because the red in the belly is so hard to see

That will be wonderful.. when you get it please post pictures and lots of luck to you and mr pacu..

Pacu are members of the Characin family...Characin species are notorious fin nippers.

Red Devil...having that 500 gallon tank is a good "next step"...but quite honestly still not and end all solution to housing Pacu. My Pacu was 36 inches long and 22 pounds when he died. When he was startled he would dart in the tank flushing gallons of water on the floor. He cracked the top of a 220 gallon tank, smashed all of the heaters in the tank, and ran into the side of the tank. He was only 20" at that time. I was absolutely concerned that he would end up cracking the tank. Having two Pacu in that tank...Oy! Good luck.
