yea right now hes in a 65gal with 3 silverdollars he seems mellow not too skitish.i do plan to have in with the dollars in the new tank.i will try and find a little wider tank the 220 is 2 feet. he is 4mos old and about 8in right now how much longer would he be ok in the 65?Do you plan to keep any other fish in there? With the proper filtration-- a bit more than you described-- I think you can keep some other smaller fish for variety.
Pacus are not typically territorial, so he shouldn't mind a few smaller tankmates as long as the water is good quality. In fact, i reccomend a few other fish in the tank to make him less likely to have a pacu "panic attack," which can result in injury to the fish's nose (as a result of smashing into the side of the tank at high speed) or a cracked tank!

For life, I'd say at least 600 gallons. let me give my acrylic guy a call and see if he can get an estimate on a larger tank for you. Also, check places like www.aquaticeco.com They have some great large tanks to browse over.

Why in the world is Wal-mart selling red-belly pacus? I wouldn't think anyone with a 300 gallon tank buys fish there

the problem with wallmart or any lfs is some kid walks in and says mommy i want that fishy.so the person nets the fish sells it to mommy and never tells her hey you know this fish gets 2-3feet.so if this fish makes it a month or so it spends its life in a 10gal tank.no your right any one with a 300gal prob dosnt buy fish from wallmart.i wouldnt.................
20 should be fine 4 the pacu .u dont need 300 gal tank.mines lived i a 30 gal for most of his life and hes fine .iv just recently upgraded to a 70 gal.he seemed guite happy in there
