The safest heater for a pacu is the one in the sump. Even if you buy the best, strongest heater, he will eventually chew through the cord. Sumps are a must for pacus because it is very important that there is NO equipment in the main tank.

I agree. My big boys even sever the emergency air lines I put in the tank during power failures. They continuously rammed a rigid "poopsucker" pipe until it broke off in the bulkhead. We're on our third pipe.

Im hoping he doesnt take out the tank. He hits it alot but thankfully not a full force. He's 8 months old and 12"+ so Im sure he could bust out if he really wanted too.

Our pacu hit the tank walls and the tank lids so hard, it sounds like an explosion. Thankfully, it's an acrylic tank. After three years, I no longer run to see if everything is ok, but I still half expect to hear the sound of 300 gallons of water running onto the wood floor of our living room.:) Our tank is undecorated with bare floor. The pacu always have cuts and scrapes from slamming into the tank lids.

Yesterday I woke up only to find out that all my fish had been frozen to death. Thanks to the pacus that broke the heater! I lost my favorite: the giant red guorami, he was definitely one of a kind w/ super bright red all around. . .

Awwww....Im sorry for your loss. I live in south florida so I do not have to worry about anyone freezing to death but I do know that Pacu like warm water. I should be getting a new tank soon and will probably set up a wet/dry or sump filtration so that I can keep as much stuff out of the tank as possible.

I have a 220 with 2 rena xp3's with 2 300 watt hydor external inline heaters works great an very little clutter in the tank don't know what kind of set-up you got but if you already had any type of canister filter it would be cheaper this way. an wouldn't have to worry about floading you floor with water if the return pump quits working.
