Pacus - Like or Dislike?

I like pacus and if I had the space I would get one also. It is usually just the fact that if you buy a big tank most people want a much more colorful and interesting fish or something that you just dont see everyday. IMO since pacus are so easy to get people just lose intrest in them and just to prefer to buy something else that is not so common. Plus most people that are not experienced and buy one and get stuck with a big fish, it becomes a burdon and in the end will end up not liking them cause they have a huge fish they don't know what to do with.

They are Petsmart/co fish. Common , cheap, big. $0.02

Ive had them an Dont really care for them. There rather drab in the color dept an unless youve got a Mega tank they really dont have the room they need to swim.

Aside from the monstrous appetite, looks, size, and availability? it's a so-so fish. I bet if they are in the "hard to get list", they would be popular. I think they are easily cultured, that's why there are so many. Now if I would do the aqua culture, that would be my choice of fish...in a warm weather area. They don't do well in cold water.

I like them just fine.just dont have a 5000 gallon tank to house a school of them properly. :swear: b@$#@&* at petsmart tried to sell me 6 for my 75g.I should have killed him

Understandable responses. Though if you own a mature pacu there is nothing like its personality, you cant find this in many other fish if any. What other fish will let you pet him or her and come up and nudge you in the aquarium until you give it attention, follows and stares at you all day, gets excited during water changes and pokes his head out of the tank when he sees you above the water, and bags on the tank lid when hungry? Thats just amazing to me that a fish can be so 'Dog Like'. Pacus are great looking fish in my opinion and extremley smart and long lived when cared for properley. From all of the other fish ive kepts (gars, arowanas, flowerhorns and more) nothing matches the 'common' pacu. If you own a mature pacu you know exactly what im talking about.

They also are aggressive at times, mine for instance will kill any other pacu in the aquarium and has actually chased them out of the tank and ripped them apart (lesson learned), though he gets along fine with other fish.

Whats not to love?

Sorry about flash.

Being relatively new to Monsterfish (and having fallen in love/lust with them) I got to know a woman from Canada online who has a 12'x6'x6' tank in her basement with some awesome fish, including a Pacu she'd had for 28 years. About a week ago she came home to find the tank, after being so dependable, had a pump problem and had drained out about half the water. Amongst other casualties, the greatest tragedy was the death of her Pacu. She is devastated--she had really connected with the fish.
One of the greatest gifts we humans here on earth (lol, as opposed to extraterrestrial?) is the immense, vast amount of choice in so many things. There's a fish for everyone, or hundred, or so!!! I've found the flowerhorn and arowana to be utterly seductive as I've gotten to know about them. More big tanks, here I come!!
sidebar: however, I will continue to raise, train and ride my monster land fish (horses) LOL  :clap

i like the way they look but dislike their jumpy personalities.

I love pacu and agree about their great personalities. They lose their "skittishness" as they mature. My redbelly pacu is currently my favorite fish in my 750g tank. They are extremely under-rated because most people don't house them properly.
