PADDLE FISH AND STURGEONS

How cold? Will room temperature be fine? I have the heater on my geo tank off right now and hes in there with them, but its still probably 78 degrees in there. There is plenty of space and the lid is nice and tight. Its not a very big sturgeon, only about 3" or so, how small of a tank can he be in for now? My bf was told he wont grow more than an inch or so every year, is this true? If he needs a plain, coldwater tank, I have a spare 10 I could use but I dont want him cramped. The other fish leave him alone for the most part.

Sturgeon in a 10g should be a crime. Take that fish back to the store if putting that fish in a 10g even crossed your mind your in way over your head.

I didn't buy it. It was a gift. Hes in a big tank now, but once winter comes I need to to heat it. And considering the lfs told him that he would be okay in a TROPICAL tank, I doubt they know what theyre doing and I won't take him back.

It's too late in the year to start a build and hes too small for a pond anyway right now. He wouldnt last a day.

So forgive me if I ask that a spare tank would be okay at his tiny size (he isn't much bigger than a minnow!) since he needs cool water. Geez.

There is a reason why there is not a lot of Info on these fish in aquariums. What type is sturgeon is it? Seeing that your in the Midwest I'd bet it's a white and not a shovel nose, as that is what I see in our lfs more often. Very few people even keep these fish on these forums and need mind blowing large set ups. If it's a shovel nosed you'll have a better chance if it's a white well just google it and you'll see there potential.

Its a Sterlet. And I live right on a river where those whites live, Ive caught the monster 5ft+ers. I know the potential. Ive read that the Sterlets will only get to be about 1.2M on average and that they grow extremely slow. Shovelnose are endangered so if thats what I ended up with, that would have been a call to the DNR when the bf showed up with it.

Paddlefish do not require cold water they do fine at moderate tropical temps 73 to 78 is fine even above for short periods. The sturgeon depends on what species it is Green and white sturgeon from the west coast really need cold water but shovelnose do not, shovelnose are being bred in captivity so any fish you got in a pet store would not be endangered. In some rivers you can fish for them as well. Paddlefish will take floating pellets, mine do, and sturgeons will pic up pellets from the bottom but do better on black worms.. I feel my paddlefish a lot of daphnia as well...

First time seen a paddlefish, thanks for sharing.
Are they filter feeders ?.

How many people have told you on other threads that sturgeon DON'T do well in tropical tanks? Apart from the fact that you can read that in every book and on every internet page. Good gracious some people really don't want to learn.
