I paint my bottom black as well, so when the fishes dig the gravel they won't see light. Especially good for those that hide in pots. I think if you have a lot of fish pooping then its good to have real substrate so there not free poop flying everywhere. In the end to each their own. Heck some people probably put GI Joes in their tanks
