Pairing Festae

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool! So if sounds like I have 2 smaller males and one female. The one smaller male is still hiding in his plant he likes. I think the move+ plus adding another festae upset him abit. But he doesn't look unhealthy. Just doesn't want to come out.

hacing a group of Festae usually works until 3-4 dominate ones emerge. And from my experience it usually ends up a dominant male and two females. Once this is recognized, it's time to remove all other Festae and sell before they get killed and you miss out on the sale option. And in a an open tank, the trio scenario has worked best for me. Especially with the one male and two female ratio. It will seem as the male goes back and forth with both and if you have a large enough tank-8' or bigger then you could be successful with the trio spawning. But that's usually not the case and one of the females end up being the punching bag.. But this works until you do get a pair bonded and somewhat selected on their own...
In your case, I suggest leaving what you have until you see signs of pairing or uncontrollable aggression. Then would be the time to remove third wheel and possibly divide the pair if they haven't paired yet

Well, little guy has come out of his plant and seems to be getting along with everyone. I re-homed my RTM last night that was stalking the tank. Everyone seems happier for it. ApparentlyIMG_5383.JPG IMG_5395.JPG IMG_5400.JPG my male JD wanted in on the photo opp. All three seemed to be getting along for now. I'll update in a month or so as not to blow this thread up too much. But we'll see which bond and I will sell the other like everyone is suggesting. I really appreciate all the info and pointers! thanks guys

Hey guys, just for fun here is a little update.
Still no pair, it seems to switch back and forth who hangs out with who, and who nips at who. Been pretty lucky thus far. No serious aggression just minor chasing and a nip here and there. It's kind of funny how their colors are totally dependent on their moods. You can tell who is in a pissy mood when i come home and one is barred up and darkened. Then the next day is fine and completely normal. I seem to have abit of white hair algae growing on one of my driftwood pieces I added a few plants to help eliminate that, just got some cheap ones from my LFS so if they get torn up, then oh well. So please excuse the algae in the pics. Here are a few shots just to show how they are coming along.

I have two small Festae, they tolerate each other well no fighting. But their little, so I don't know if I'd call them a pair. I would like to get a pair down the road my question is. Should I add 2 or 3 more little festae to the tank in hopes to get a pair? Or just hope these two hit it off? My LFS has about 4 little ones just about the right size. So if I needed to I could snag a few. Thoughts?View attachment 1167861

Hey Nice Festae. I was taking some random photos of my fish today and was almost finished deleting the pics I didn't want when I just happened to key in on the following pic that show some eggs. Next mystery is why would she have laid eggs. There is another festae in the tank, but I think it's another female.

a female will lay eggs even without a male in presence. Matter of fact, often times females will attempt to spawn, obviously nothing comes of it. But it does happen

Go to know thanks! That's about all the makes sense to me, unfortunately. Would love confirmation of there being a male and female in the tank. Is there a point, prior to seeing wigglers, I could visually tell if they'd been fertilized?

Yes, they will turn white and fungus over if they are not fertil. Post pics of the other fish and we will tell you the sex, however if it's not there guarding the eggs it is most likely not the papa

I have a remote flash on order to take better pics. Here's the best pic I could get of the other one. It has the dark dorsal fin that is supposed to be an indicator of a female. Also the one that laid the eggs wasn't letting anything get near them. Even the 12" Oscar was made to pout in the corner until somebody ate them all as of today.
