Pete,
as soon as i seen it i though dovii, female. but its shape look off. im not sure if it due to feed regime (on a off day) but that shape doesn't look right to me so may be a hybrid, deformed or needs more food.

don't take that the wrong way i don't know your feed schedule or the fish may be the pic angel.

the mouths looks way too big and broad for Dovii was my 1st instinct, agree? Shouldn't it be smaller and more narrow?

Yeah I thought that as well frank, but it obviously varys slightly from fish to fish, I can see Dovii and jag in different parts if you know what I mean, but the pattern and colouration just looks female Dovii to me, how large is the fish?? 4"-5"

It is either a Male Red Tiger motaguense that is "deformed" ( from standard shape) or a hybrid, you can clearly see the red dots around the gill plate. I have never seen a wolf cichlid have markings like a motaguense, IME

i think it's safe to say the body shape def suggest it has some sort of deformity

I think that fish is a male mota and not even deformed and here is why...earlier I gave credit for the good pics that Achilles gave because they allow for a close up...and if you zoom in to the under belly ,you can see the male genitalia(in the area between the plant stem and driftwood branch)...and secondly I think he is maybe due to not being the dominant fish of the tank not getting a large amount of food to bulk him up....my male mota got sick the first month I had him and did not eat for a couple of weeks, became emaciated and looked like a very different fish until he got back on his feed...

Parachromis that are sub full size can have a similar look...and as they develop can look like one species or another in the genus...and can look much different than you might think once they mature..Look how this one changed from when he was sick and underweight....
