Parachromis ID

Right, thank you for everyone's in put and I can see a number of valid points to a number of the proposed ID's. In the interests of full disclosure the reason why the fish has a sunken belly is that while all My fish were staying in the lfs sump tank while I moved house my fahaka has taken a chunk out of the poor buggers belly. However he/she has amazingly bounced back and is eating and seems quite happy! He/she is now called seppuku, and is a firm favourite as he is clearly tough a nails.

Apologies for not mentioning this earlier as I didn't think you could see it in the pictures.. But you are all clearly analysing them in detail!

This has obviously affected the body shape of the fish, it was mainly the colouration that confused me initially as it was distinctly unjaguar like. If you need further pictures let me know.

GEEZ....what do you mean the puffer "Took a chunk out of his belly".......how did his guts not spill out everywhere????!!!

I didn't know anything about it for a few weeks till I got my new tank set up and went back to collect him... Then I saw the hole in his belly and thought he was done for! But amazingly he/she has coloured up lovely and is eating happily. Given that he/she is only 4-5 inches long and the fahaka is 14 inches and built seppuku must be the toughest fish I ever met!

but what about the internal organs......I don't see how it could have survived something like that....

Me neither! I was considering if I should euthanize the poor fish but he is fine... I guess nothing vital for hit. I heard a human can live without half their intestines maybe fish are equally resilient lol

that's incredible. Frankenstein's monsterfish......do you keep "spare parts" for him since that happened? LOL

So people were right in determining that something was off with your fish...but it was disfiguered not deformed....Your fish is indeed unlucky/lucky...unlucky that he lost part of his midsection but lucky that he did not loose his man part(zoom in to midsection to see)... guess what ?.....my female mota lost part of her midsection too....was on her way to being a stunner and took a bad beating from the male that I didn't catch in time....when she healed where she excreates was literally relocated ..I kid you not.....

Dude! That's amazing!? Your fish basically regenerated a destroyed organ...Did the gap ever fill out or was there always a hole? It doesn't bother me as he is such a cool fish he is going no where. I think the punisher was right about them having spare parts!

Ah right I see it never fully healed, but otherwise she looks great.. It can't have been to much of a hinderance to her life.
