This female was donated to us recently, about 10" and 2.5 years old, so I thought I'd start her story with the arrival video:

The jaguar has been doing exceedingly well, prefers thawed fish to pelleted cuisine. It's been rather tolerable of tank mates, occasionally I saw it charging a 2' IDS and 1' snail bullhead tank mates from its end of the 240 gal by the strainer bowl. It's grown quite plum, comes first to the feeding, tries to mouth the food before it even hits the water, grabs a few mouthfuls and swims back to its end.

Nothing to add much. Only tank mates remaining are the smaller 9 of the 18 lima shovelnose and the mottled Indian eel.

About 12" now:

An update on the now 3.5 yo jaguar cichlid from Allison.

It's been getting more aggressive toward certain tank mates. It wouldn't tolerate our 1 foot snail bullheads (lasted a few weeks, bitten up and beat up, then rehomed), nor a 2 foot SA lungfish (lasted overnight, bitten up, rehomed). It has been fine with other tank mates - the 9 LSN catfish and the FL gar and a 20" common pleco.

Little by little it's been increasingly more aggressive to me too to the point that every time I pass by the tank (except the feeding time, which she knows full well) she puffs up her gill covers, postures, approaches the glass and tries to intimidate me with her size and attitude. And a few days back I caught in passing her kind of trembling and shaking by a large concrete block in the tank, which made me think she is in a breeding mood.

These videos are not about her but her tank mates and feature her prominently throughout:

I am not sure what happened. I believe it is overfeeding, which seems to occur often with CA cichlids. If so, a note for self to keep such fish either alone so I can control their feed uptake or in a company of highly competitive / equally competitive tank mates, which the lima shovelnose and the gar could not be for this cichlid.

I think also that it is possible that the jaguar increased her feeding to produce eggs, because I had seen what looked like strange, possibly breeding mood behavior prior.

Fed fine, then suddenly got bloated over two days and perished. 12". 4.5 years old.

Sorry Allison.

Yup cichlids have a hard time stopping on there own. If food is there they will eat it. Sorry for the loss of your jag...

Not trying to stir things up but I am wondering how you kill so many fish from over feeding but not learn a lesson to not over feed.
