I will try something like that if I reintroduce. Had to break up the pair today. She has cuts and both have eye cloudiness from the days fighting. Now they seem to be so sad..

For sure if you don't want to see battle damage best way is to keep them alone...a pair kept together means there is going to be a split fin at the very least from time to time, my female even gets the male....pros and cons all the way around...alone my male mota does not feed as well.but with the female in he is a greedy &%$#@ and tries to eat all the food lol,she has her hiding area and he then doesn't bother her....on the flip side any other fish he will relentlessly straight try to kill....

I put them back together with intense divider and a convict. Her Am was between .25 and .50 ppm...she was being poisoned. The filter was cycled, I don't know...they had separation anxiety and looked depressed. She was just swimming in circles. They don't deserve this. I know they are better with me, but at the same time, I want to enjoy my monsters. So, until I can get her tank stable, I will risk the skin on my arm to keep them apart

For this reason I have stopped keeping the very large and aggressive species.Striking and appealing though they are, accommodation for there long term needs can be hit and miss.
I don't like to see lone cichlids, personally I always feel a bit sorry for them.
From now on I will only be keeping the less troublesome cichlids so I can give them a mate and observe some natural behavior.
To be honest my thorichthys tank is my favourite set up I have ever had,I like it because they are best in groups and the interaction I find interesting and the fish seem happy.
it's nice you are doing the best you can for your jags and I know how you feel.I hope it all works out for you.

Thank you. I am home most the time, so I can spend the needed time with the large fish with personality. The aggressive behavior, though, I don't like. And I researched these fish...a lot...before I decided to give them a home. For now they are doing great! I made a great spot for Chica to hide and Buddy, so far, can't get in. Also, the convict keeps them distracted...he has lots of room and spots to hide.
