Paralyzed Blue Acara

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you so much for your information and updates because this has helped me. A few days ago my healthy electric blue acara was swimming fine and then when I went to feed them in the evening I noticed he was on the floor hiding and when he came up to get food he wasn't moving his back tail and that has been the same for the last 3 days he will not move his tail at all swimming head up so I am thinking after doing some research that is the same as your fish it must have been a spine injury. I will post some pictures tomorrow in the day

In the past breeders would automatically cull such deformities, before shipping to LFSs.
But with the current fad in creating deformities such as "sort bodies", distortions, hybrids and BPs, its not surprising that some latent genes prevent such mutations from presenting early.

It looks like this thread is fast turning into a "show us your crippled acara" thread!! I have one, and at first he was a bossy little thing. He'd come to the surface and snatch worms out of my fingers, a right little character he was.

And then he seemed to start bending, to the point where he now looks like an "S" when viewed from above. He can't swim properly and i'm not sure whether he's getting enough food now. He spends most of his time hidden in my val, you can just see him in the centre of the picture below.

A totally different fish to the one I purchased. At first I thought he'd somehow damaged his spine but it could well be bad genes. I don't hold out much hope for him but I can't even net him out and euthanasia him, i'd just uproot all my val and make a right mess.

Every morning I come down and search for him, just in case he's died. I'd need to remove his body quickly so it doesn't foul my water up.

It's very sad, I had high hopes for him and he started off so well too.

Mine didnt look deformed at first, it just stopped using its tail over night. I just figured he looks the way he does now from losing muscle in his tail and the rest of the body continuing to grow.

It never actually sulked and was still fiesty.

It lives in a 75g with an angel and severum. Eats fine and defends its spot in the tank.

Hope the same for your fish!
