I have always wanted a bigger tank, to put in some freshwater stingrays or to turn it into a marine tank. Now last year, I discussed this with my mom and she said ok, and eventually we found a 265 gallon tank with everything and it was like 3 hrs away(pretty good for around here). But the deal broke down and he sold it to someone else( I looked for more than a year before I found that tank). Now this year, I just want to get a small saltwater(like a nano cube or something) or a kinda big tank(100-150). Now shes like you cant get anything because you have to go to college in three years. i would think she would have let me go with the small tank at least. She doesnt pay any of it, I have a job.

Srry for blabbering.

:grinno:yea, parents suck!

I had tanks growing up, nothing huge, but a lot of them. At one point I have over 300 gal. worth of tanks in my parents house. 100 gal and 29 gal salt, two 55's, two 20's and a 29 fresh. My parents were supportive, until that electricty bill rolled around every month. It was also a huge hassle when I moved out. I didn't take the tanks with me right away as i lived on campus. My parents didn't really take over the several hours of work a week to maintain these tanks and my entire live stock slowly parrished. I ended up selling all the big tanks a few years later (my parents still have a ton of twenties and 29's in their garage, unless they sold them).
I'm going to side with your mom on this one buddy. A monster tank when you're moving soon (and a couple of years is soon) just isn't fair to your mom who will be the one to pick up your responsibilites with the tank when you leave. It'd be like getting a dog now and expecting her to take care of it when you go off to college, except dogs are easier than a monster or salt tank.
Stick with the smaller tanks for now and be ready to get rid of your livestock before you leave. Get what you want when you get your own place.
I think it is great you pay for your own stuff, try flipping your mom a few bucks for the electricty bill now and again and she might even be more supportive of you hobby.

eh, i dont live with my parents anymore nor did i get into the hobby until after i had moved out. but as a parent myself, i would be supportive of your fish keeping hobby. there are alot worse hobbies kids could have besides fish) 3 years is plenty of time. and personally, i wouldnt mind you leaving the tank at home when you moved out, but if your mom doesnt want to deal with it then youd better sell it before you leave..

Don't feel too bad. It's not just a kid thing. My dad has wanted a fish tank for years and my mom won't let him have one. I have been working on that though.

IMO, the one thing you have to remember is that is is their house, therefore it's their rules. They might not always be fair. Try to think of your parents as the mods of your house. You have to live with whatever they do. That being said, you have to just cross your fingers and hope a good opportunity comes along.
Personally, I never thought that my parents would let me have any big tanks either.
I started out with a 7 gallon a little over a year ago, worked my way up to a 55g, and this summer I'll be building a 1000g, all because my parents said I could.
Basically, stay diligent and hope for the best.

What i did was buy first talk later. Although it might not work for you but it got me a 180g:grinno:. Hopefully u get what u want:headbang2

asking for forgiveness is better than asking for permission.

Im a parent my self and id love for my son to get involved in the hobby!
My parents were also keen fish hobbyists, so i guess i never had the problem youve got.. tough break mate..
