discus arent an option then.
why not try to produce some firecons? (firemouth/convict hybrid... they look pretty cool.)

glad to see this worked out and I hope your situation begins to work itself out. doesn't sound like specific issue other than another victim of the economy as I read it it seems like you have a house 3600km away, lost employment there and were forced to move to where the jobs were, now you can't sell your house and can't take on two mortgages to get a new place (few can).

I see no issue then with keeping a hobby, once you are able to either move back to where your house is and still have amiable employment, or are able to sell it and buy a place nearer your current job you won't have an issue. both of those are things you have no control over. So i say happy fish keeping and i vote something less maintainance than discus, gorgeous fish for sure, but personally more work than I'm willing to put in.

how about breeding african cichlids?

Hard water with a neutral PH has Central American Cichlids written all over it.......

Glad it might work out for you.

Really?

If the changes in the economy dissolved his job, which is how I read his situation...

There will logically be a period where he is gaining the knowledge, skills or experience to become similarly employeed...

Which means there will be a period of time where income will be less than before, but the expectation that thinigs will eventually be as they were before could be made...

So the guy is just supposed to sit idle without personal entertainment until then?

When other responsibilities such as marriage, children, etc get in the way of a hobby, by all means put that hobby off...

But when financial limitations interfear with entertainment, I highly suggest one look for ways to decrease the financial burden of entertainment but by all means continue to seek entertainment... If not despression will surely set in...

As several of us suggested... mature, respectful communication... that will tell you what the real problem is and will tell you if there is any way to gain a mutually pleasing conclusion...

But all in all... there are many perspectives here that I just simply don't get...
I agree with the depression part. Usually human nature kicks in though and you spend that money on entertainment anyhow. I left work for three months to work for another shop. Only time I was depressed was when I left the other shop and was in the process of getting my current job back it took two months and a diploma but im back. All the while waiting it was either pay for the prozac and valium (from the doctor) or some fishkeeping. I restarted my hobby and now that I am back employed I just indulge it and have great fun.;):headbang2 Glad to hear it may work out for you.
