Passive motoro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could be water quality.... i say it could also be the sand....

Mouth is irritated.... from eating off the sand

pelvic fin is irritated.... used for moving across the sand

belly is irritated... from sliding across the sand

anus is irritated.... from possible ingestion of the sand and then passing it

On radasands website, they state that the grain shape is angular to semi-round, but do not mention the type of rock it is.

To me, the sand is a possible cause. If not, the bacteria in the sand may infect or worsen the irritation. I would remove the sand either way. Go barebottom for treatment.

remove the sand, bump the temp up and treat with salt.....

Thank you for the input.

I wil never use radasand with stingrays again, just to be shure.

The tank is now barebottom, i am adding salt, changing 50% water every 2nd day, and the temperature is rising!

Today the female motoro have shown interest in food.

I found the male motoro dead today.

The two remaining females, hystrix and motoro, are looking better.

Here are some pictures.
- First one of the female motoro, rest of the dead male.

sorry for ur loss..

what was he like prior to his death?
the disc is very irritated.. it almost looks like really bad ammonia burn.. if i were to guess; i would say cause of death was due to stress/ bad water. the ray looks like its well nourished! did u quarantine the ray when u first got it?

Prior to hes death he was laying still on the bottom, some times swimming with hes nose up high.

The stress teori culd be right. Couse i have done alot with the tank since i got the rays six weeks ago. Changed from small gravel to sand, from sand to larger gravel, from larger gravel to fine sand (possbly a sharp one..)... and now barebottom. All this changes cant be good. But frankly i have had a hard time finding out what wuld be best for them. Everyone tells me different things..

The trubble began one week after had been gone for a few days. The PH had dropped and the nitrate level was high. Also i changed to sand a day after i camed home- and it was after all this the rays got sick. But they got sick almost two weeks later.. thats what makes me wonder.
( water have been good ever since- with 20-50% WC every 2-3 day).

I had the 540 liter aquarium with nothing in it, so that was theyr "quarantine" (been in that tank the whole time).

They began eating after couple of hours in the tank, and have eaten well all the way - until to they got ill.

well it sounds like u understand ur situation.. this is excellent! next time u will be far more successful! don't give up. :)

I have been doing a lot of research, reading- and thinking. I am almost 100% shure there are more that one reason to why they got ill.

Its have been painfull, but to think positive- i have learned some good lessions. Much more likely to succeed next time. Thats for shure.

Thanks for the guidance!
