I would check the water, i know they are sensitive to water conditions! Mine all seem to twitch occassionally and some stop eating for a few days. Good luck, hopefully he will start eating soon! They sometimes smash against the glass and driftwood that could cause some bumps, i would add salt and do some water changes, have a powerhead in there to keep the water circulating but have areas for the payara to hide out!

What is your water parameters for your Payaras ? like PH etc...

Is there a way you could get a shot of the white bumps? I don't really see them in your first pic. If you can, look as close as you can and see if the white bumps are bumps or tiny crustaceans.

Well the Payara ate 3 big pearl danios today so that's a good sign and I'm doing water changes every 2nd day with the temp at 85. Let's hope it works. I'm still trying to get a good pic to post.

Hi man happy to hear your guy is doing good, happy to say my red tail payara are all eating silverside soaked in vitamins. My scomberoids are only eating gubbies and minnows.
I was thinking Mike your water sounds a little hot, since they love the faster waters i would think they would like 78 degrees. I keep my water at 80-82 max. Thats just what i was thinking, not sure if i am correct keep us posted

Normaly I keep it at 78 but I'm almost certain there is an external parasite involved here so I'm trying to throw every curve ball at it. I'm charging my digicam battery and I will try again for updated photos. I think you will see what I mean.

Mike if its an external parasite you should use some meds like Prazipro. When mine came in i treated them all with it just to be safe.

Its great stuff and very safe. Make sure to take out all forms of mechanical filteration like carbon or purigen since it will take it back out! The stuff works very fast also, my big red tail came in not eating and i treated for internal wild parasites, not sure if the prazipro worked but it seemed after treatment he started to eat like crazy!

Also for water i just keep everything perfect amazon river stlye with lots of peat and black water extract!

Cool,
Thanks for the reply Bro. I just gave my first treatment of Prazipro. Now I'm certain it is an external parasite. I used my maglite on the Payara to really get a detailed look and noticed these parasites that look like hydras. I personally have never seen these in my 32 years of fish-keeping. Look at the pectoral fin just below where it joins the body. Do you see the parasite? Now I count 5 in all because this pic is a few days old, 3 of them are really small and white. Do you know what they are???? Thanks for any help

I am not sure what it is, but do the whole prazipro treatment it gets rid of lots of stuff, maybe its a fluke. Hope he gets better fast!
