Payara rubbing her teeth against the glass - Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
bit late but it was pretty normal. I had this experience with mine. no need to pull it out yourself.

Thank you lix. I think she's fine right now. She is eating and swimming normally. There is only one thing that seems strange, sometimes she shakes her head, I never saw this behaviour in any fish. Did you ever see it?

Not exactly. She is shaking her head but don't against the glass. It is sporadically. She shakes her head and after that open her huge mouth. It's a funny thing.... seems like a MMA fighter stretching his neck muscles and jaws before the fight.

Is it when you are looking at her near the tank? I'm assuming it's just trying to get you to back away from her area, I know my serra piranha does a head shake and 'barks' at me when he doesn't want me around.

Hi Rampage...

No, to be honest she does these movements even when I'm far way from her.

Could be something related with her missing tooth?

I´m just a bit curious if others red tail payaras eventually makes the same "head tilt" as mine.

Thank you guys...sorry my poor english

My GATF does this as well too, but only sporadically. Sometimes he'll fin up at me and start gnashing his teeth and/or yawning really wide at me. Its become really rare since he's gotten larger, though. Now he just begs for food lol

After think about this, my armatus definately does what you have described. mine sometimes shakes his head, open wides his mouth (bares his fangs), and flared his gills. Mine was just cruising around my tank and doing this a few moments ago! Perfectly normal if you ask me.
