its not always to match their diet perfectly but to give them all the vitamins possible and nutrients in a wide variety. you have to remember the fish, birds, small mammals that they are eating also have insects, grains, and water vegetation, larva, micro organisms..ect

they don't eat grains or vegetation.. bugs are meat, so are bug larvae..

go ahead boost, drop a piece of corn or oatmeal into your tank, your peacock bass will NOT eat it..

Piscivores not Carnivores ;) Similar but not the same :)

My two scents cause they stink

I like to feed Live as much as possible.

My live feeds are now and have been for the past year or so..

African Cichlids

Some

American cichlids

Some Sunfish...

All of which were and are free from local breeders. I mainly get their colorless culls and deformities..

Non live foods I feed.

I also scour the local ads for large Pacu.. I stopped picking up free O's as they are not very Meaty (as Morledzep) would say. Gold Saums are also more bone less meat..

But Pacu!! The last one I cut up could have fed me and my family!! The two filets from head to tail were larger that two large T-bones!! I cubed the filets. They lasted quite a while in the diet.

I buy the 2lb packages of Green shell on Market shrimp. They are half the price of all krill I have priced and you get 2wice as much per bag. And takes less to fill them up

I also implement Night crawlers and sometimes super worms... Super worms are not intentional as I feed those to My Aro. And the Cichla trained themselves to eat them....

Super worms if you have fed them, you know that Cichla, ABSOLUTELY cannot digest the exo skeleton the worms come out the way they went in but a reddish color... And flat or hollow...

Night crawlers I have noticed that, though they are VERY high in Protein... have little effect on growth. In fact my personal experience is they good by taking longer to digest... But that is about all I have noticed from my use of them.

I also love feeding smelt Right out the grocer... This too is not half the price of krill or silversides... BUT 1/10th of the price!!!!

Some of the time I push a fork prong into the bellies of these delicacies and then load them with NLS mainly because I just like sayin I use NLS

I also load the market shrimp sometimes... Usually with a fountain soda straw It effectively takes out a good chunk of shrimp and allows for adding about 5-10 3-5 mm pellets

I have on occasion added vitamins to both the food and water... Marinating sometimes and sometimes not... this can be spendy so I don't do it much lately...

I don't disagree with most ways people feed their Cichla... Mainly because I obviously disagree with everyone on this topic Cichla are Piscivores Still everyone has their way that works for them.

Feeders are obviously necessary for a time, if that is all you can afford or have access to... But in my opinion I have yet to see pellets out weigh Live Cichlids for Color enhancement... That is strictly my opinion

And that is my opinion because, Cichlids are faster than most other feeders that are selected for Cichla... and the environments are closer in some aspects... There; in my opinion, is nothing like a Cichla HUNTING or chasing; even briefly, a cichlid. Which is ten times faster and smarter than any goldfish. And the Colors while hunting and even after eating are in my opinion UNMATCHED

Now this is strictly my opinion from my limited experience. So take what you need and disregard the rest.

im not sure if its the cichlid you are feeding them that enhances their color or their mood of the chase and kill, if you ask me its their mood that makes them glow like that. don't forget water quality also plays an important role in color development
