pbass not coloring up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i had gravel in my tank before, then i took it out hoping that would solve the problem. I too know about the alpha male theory, however even the biggest pbass is light in color.

Get some dark colored substrate. Bare bottom tanks do not go well for bringing out a fish's color potential. The best combo for brining out colors on a fish is light, diet, and substrate. A fish's color can still come out w/a bare bottom tank. But it is more likely to show when a dark substrate is provided. You can also change the diet. Feeders are a horrible source of nutrition for any fish. Try feeding shrimp, krill, silversides, pellets, and other things of that nature.

Could be nurtured could be nature. Check these tems, you don't see that many like these even in the wild. Anyone care to share if these are sub-species or due to external factors (food, water parameter..)? IMO these tems are the prettiest of all pbass:) It will be nice if someone could come out and share with the rest.

god those are f*cking beautiful.

From the looks of it, the owner (johnptc) didn't even photohopped it. Yeah, amazing Tem... who needs other pbass if you can have paca like these and azul when they are in the 'mood' for love. :)

^^^ i couldnt have said it any better. only thing you forgot is water quality ;)

I'd say water quality over substrate ;) Look at johnptc photo, the substrate is nowhere near black and yet the fish are brilliantly lit up. Perhaps pH of 6 and maybe blackwater are all we need. Check out this link, click the dates and see those Rio Negro (black river) Tem. See those 'darkened' orino, it dawns on me that our Orinos look better in pH of 6 and clearwater. Maybe this is the same case for Tem as the above photo can attest. http://www.radersfishandgame.com/pb_fish_reports.htm

not so much from the black water but from soft water and of cause god water quality.. those tems are really big. the bigger your cichla are the nicer the color.
