im gona be running a sump. very little chance of sand getting in if i choose sand. i might do the pea gravel wana post some pics of it? i wana see what it looks like in a tank with fish and all thanks in advance :D

Just put the intake up a little higher if you want sand. My Pbass never touched the bottom or stirred the sand. Worked perfectly fine. No sand in the FX5

I started with bare bottom on my new tank. Decided to put sand because it looked too sterile without substrate. The 3000 gph pump sucked the sand into the filter. It was like a sand storm and dunes formed in spots exposing the glass bottom. I just added HomeDepot pea gravel two days ago. So far so good. Looks pretty natural.

I have two bass and my substarte is medium and large river rock mixed with a few bags of gravel from the lfs ill post some pics but it works awesome for all my fishies easy to clean.. very easy srry got it from lowes 3 50 pound bags and 3 25's from lfs

Personally I would go bare bottom...but thats just me. I hate gravel/sand in tanks.

You might hate sand/gravel but you ever think about what the fish wants? Its like living in a house with no bed, furniture, tv etc...haha. But seriously..i have seen some amazing bare bottom tanks but i prefer the natural setting tank.

in all of my tanks.. i have a mixture of crushed coral ($15 for 15 lbs at Petsmart) and river rocks of various sizes.. most i bought at home depot for $5 per bag but i'm not exactly sure what size the bag is.. i know 2 bags of river rocks and 1 bag of crushed coral is just the right amount of substrate for a 100 gallon aquarium.

If that's the case I would go for sand. With gravel you have to vacuum regularly. As long as circulation is good in the tank waste will be picked up by the filter and the sand will stay relatively clean. You could also mix sand and gravel for a natural look.

black 3M ColorQuartz t-grade is my favorite, but g/l finding it

Pool filter Sand....

No sand...
The color still looks the same to me. As you can tell, sand makes the tank darker, as apposed to no sand make them brighter.
