PBB???

How many dorsal finlets on the fish shown here ?

They seem that they all have 14 finlets. That one don't seem PBB though. I have 6 of those with 13-15 finlet that are Nigerian Laps. Exact headshape.

Was leaning toward this one. Thicker lower jaw like most PBB are.


Here are pics of CDM PBB. Look exactly alike with 14 finlets.

I think there's something a bout the PBBs head that makes it rather unique compared to that of other members of the PB complex. The distance between the tip of the jaw to the pectorial fin appears to be somewhat longer in Pbb when compared with a Lap of same total length.
Also, the eyes on Pbb are usually set back further than those of a Lap giving the impression of a longer face on this species.
The reason i requested for photos with better lighting can be seen in CDM's photo. It makes it a whole lot easier to see the features better.

As Ricky said, one needs to consider multiple features to be able to arrive at an accurate conclusion on the species.
Honestly, i have seen giant Guinea Laps that looked very much like Pbb. But, the head features just did'nt match up.

Yes, this specimen is the one I'm refering to, the 3rd one in pic 1. Compared to lapradeis, PBB's skull seems to be wider(from the top view) and I agree to what africanman said regarding their eyes. Besides, PBBs do seem to have thicker lower jaws than their counterparts. Also guys, I noticed that both CDM's and taisho's PBBs have a white "7" on their cheeks and so does toykogasmask's PBB(Turkana variant). Is that present in all PBBs?

Those mark are also present on some bullethead laps.

Also by looking at the tip of the snout is much longer distance to the eye on PBB. Where laps of the same size have a much closer distance. Also by looking at the lower jaw. Lap have even chin and thickness of the lower lips and PBB have much pronouce chin compare to its lower lips.

This is a 14 dorsal fin speciment and it was ID by Tokyogasmask as a Lap Actually there is only 1 nigerian Lap in the lot, the other 3 are suppose to be PBB.

If you look at the first picture posted, the second one is a confirm nigerian lap as I raised him from small and it has only 13 dorsal fins, as for the other 3 I got them as "PBB".

Any conclusion on the fish? I may have a video of them if I can download them into youtube. I see when I can do that.

The conclusion - is that there's only 1 true PBB among the 4 bichirs. The true PBB is the one mentioned by King-el and Infblue. Do share a vid of it for us to enjoy:D

I still stick by this one not being PBB.
