I've got a couple of projects in the works that require fans. Aquarium fans seem overpriced so I'd like to use some cheap PC fans. Right now I'm looking at this puppy: 120 mm, moves 89 cubic feet per minute, runs $12.

Any other recommendations? A fan with better performance and similar price, or similar performance and lower price, would be great.

I really like aerocool turbines. i have one on the side of my case havnt had any problems and was quite cheap for performance. i felt it was better than the enermax twister it replaced.

yea I'd pay attention to the cfm and dba alot of cfm is nice, but if it become annoying (some fans whine rather than whirr, whinning is unbearable even at low dba)

but definetly a nice flwo 120mm would do the job. What's the usage? lighting?

Yeah. I'm building a canopy that could use a fan or two, and an enclosed algal scrubber that will definitely need some strong ventilation.

Can't go wrong with scythe fans, I personally are to cheap to use them I use Rosewill fans instead since they are ball bearing fans

scythe fans are good, I've also use sunons with great success for watercooling setups. Though sunons have a tendency for high dba. lol

The Scythe fan I listed is 46 dBA. I don't have a very good idea of what that will sound like in practice. Moderate noise is not a problem- the tank is in the lobby of a building, not a bedroom or office, so it's already a noisy environment.

Another question- how do I go from the 3-pin fan cable to standard 120V plug?

there are several ways to change cabling over, personally though i've always grabbed a psu rigged the on/off switch and done it that way. (of course there's the paper clip mod but that + water = fire lol)
there are two wires on the 24 pin mobo plug that start the psu when connected if you splice these wires and hook them to an on/off switch then the psu will run without a mobo. I can walk you trhough this or dig up an article on it if you like. It's the way I run my phase change cooler independant of a pc.

as for dba 46 is kinda high but it depends on the fan. I'd get 1 and try it out. if it's too annoying then you've only gotten 1 fan rather than all of them lol.
