A walkthrough would be awesome! Electrical and electronic stuff is definitely not my strong suit, but I can follow directions.

The Scythe fan I listed is 46 dBA. I don't have a very good idea of what that will sound like in practice. Moderate noise is not a problem- the tank is in the lobby of a building, not a bedroom or office, so it's already a noisy environment.

Another question- how do I go from the 3-pin fan cable to standard 120V plug?

You can't. The Scythe fan is 12 Volts DC at 0.60 Amp. Unless you have a 12 volt supply is won't work, you will fry the fan. You will need a power supply to go from 120V 60Hz to 12V DC. If you want to use line power without a converter get an AC fan. Digikey has them for 16.58.

These you just wire in a plug to the two connectors on the fan. If you get this fan PM me and I'll send you pictures on this I used it to cool a dual 96 Watt PC light fixture.

You could also just buy an el-cheapo computer power supply unit ($10 - $15 new if you don't have one laying around) and power as many fans as you need.

That is very good to know, thank you! I found a comparable AC Mechatronics fan that I can buy a wall-outlet cord with ($19 for fan + cord). ANy thoughts on this fan?

That should do the trick. If it's a salt water application the life span of the fan might be a little shorter than rated but it would be with any fan.

If using more than 2 fans sure but otherwise not cost effective.

Who doesn't have an old computer laying around though...

If you go to a local computer store (the mom and pop guy, not the big box store) he'd prob give you an old psu and fan for $5 or so out of a junk pc.

If you have a 12v power supply you can wire it up easy. An old tranformer power pack form a printer or something? most cell phone chargers are are around 5v so they won't work
