peacock bass died :[

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ill give a full detail of my tank and what not.

The tank is a jebo 72 gallon tank with overhead filter. In the filter is those bio rings and lots of sponges.

Stock, 1 pleco, 4 feeder goldfish that grow that i used to cycle my tank when i first got it, and the 5 bass. Keep in mind this is just for grow out till 5-6 inches. They will be move to a 180 that i will soon purchase.

Water parameter is ammonia shows up at 0, nitrite is at 0 and nitrate is 1.

temperature is kept at 79-80 degree.

Water changes are done every 3-4 days, conditioned with prime to remove cholrine. Every change is 25% or 1/4 of the tank. The last one i did was half the tank since they seem to be stressing.

Since i notice they were stressing, i added salt and melafix.

The bass are the only ones showing signs of stress, the goldfishes are fine and so is the pleco.

signs that i noticed are, fading of colors, lost of appetite, they surface to gasp for air.(I have a powerhead with air line, so the powerhead provide alot of bubbles for the tank).

awesome! good info.

Try bumping the temperature up to 84* to see if they start feeling better. small cichla are usually better off in high temp water. They don't have ich do they? when juvi cichla are stressed and in tanks with water less than 82* they usually break out with ich. Its wierd that they are coming to the surface to gulp air with that much aeration.

Try not to use meds at all at the small of a age. Salt is fine, but use only 1/2 the amount recommended. Keep using feeder guppies, but try to convert to crushed pellets, shrimp, or ghost shrimp. Feed heavy in the morning and that's it. Most likely your fish died from lack of nutrition. Bass at that age needs a lot of food due to their high metabolism.

bass loosing there appetite is bad news, hopefully the rest make it, gl

afterthought- that is pretty strange that there at the top gulping for air, maybe you should double check your water again, also in my experience with melafix, whenever i use it i have to add hella extra air or a big hob, otherwise there just isnt enough air for them, especially with salt in there too, ive had this happen several times, never with a loss, but still its something to consider

Sorry for your loss......

thanks for the kind words and an update for anybody that's interested. Out of the 5 i have, the biggest one is still alive and one of the smaller one. 3 of them passed away. I have since added salt, stop the use of melafix and added an extra powerhead for extra flow and bubbles. I'm not sure why the smaller one that is alive is gasping for air at the top of the tank when i have an excessive amount of bubble being created from the powerhead. Also They seem to show very little appetite.

Thanks for all the suggestions and kind words that has been posted so thus far.
