peacock hap paradise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice sized tank. So have you started to decided what species? (IE are you going to go for the larger haps, or since you said peacocks I assume you are going to stay with guys that usually stay below 10 inches.) Also I assume you were planning on doing an all male tank, but if you aren't please tell.

Finally have you actually kept that feather rock with you ahli? Because I originally had just normal lace rock and that ended up scaring 2 of my haps eyes during the night... So just watch out. (I was really pissed because over a night it made my ~40 dollar show male no longer worth much besides breeding and I don't breed that type.)

Anyways I look forward to seeing what you end up with. Though I saw you were saying crushed shells, which I have in my 135, but I have to say that you might enjoy some sand better (especially if you get some Fossorochromis rostratus, which with that size tank I would strongly suggest you do.)

Thanks All , had a few minutes to sneak on here there had been a lot of traffic on here since I left. Ikevi I will be stocking with as many aluonocara species as I can find , and of course a fryeri electric blue (iceburg) and havent been able to find many hap species that are readily avalible but I do want to keep them around the same size as the al so 10" would be the largest species size I would perfer.Always open to suggestions. I will try to put a few females of some of the rarer species in their to try to help with keeping them ava for all.Like al basengi and a few others . The only rock I have kept my electric blue ali with were lava and lace this is going to be new so I am taking every precaution to make sure nothing happens to them(with the new rock).Mike congradulations See you when you get back:)

So first off I want to stress that you should either go species tanks if you are planning on having females or just an all-male tank.

The reasons are 2 fold. The largest one is that you will never know what species the female breed with. For example just yesterday I wanted my male red empress get it on with a female german red peacock. (And I know for a fact that the Ahli does the same and that the fry will live.) So in other words you will get hybrids and that obviously isn’t doing what you sounded like your reason for a female would be.

Second adding females especially for peacocks will cause the dominate male to show more color, but then the sub doms will show a lot less color.

Ok that being said I would actually suggest that you limit yourself on the peacocks and tend towards more haps. Again just so that you can get more color since the peacocks tend to cause more infighting between different species of peacock and hence less color.

(Doesn’t mean you can’t have say at least 5 different peacocks, one of each.)

For an example here are some of the peacocks I would put in. (You might just have to order them online, it is cheaper and smarter if you get a bunch which with that tank you will be wanting to do anyways.)

So yah fish I would say that would work well:

OB Peacock (they just look good, if you don’t care about hybrids then go for one.)
German red
Albino Eureka Peacock (Just and all together good type of albino to get, plus they add something different to the tank.)
Lwanda
Say 2 Aulonocara stuartgranti of some type say a blue neon and a ngara (ie flametail)
Now some people would stick in something like a Yellow Regal but if you want yellow, adding some yellow labs is really the way to go…

As for the haps I could name a ton that I have really liked over the years, but I will name the ones that are on my all fav that you haven’t mentioned yet.

IE
Steveni Taiwan (both normal and albino are great)
Red empress
Protomelas sp. "Spilonotus Tanzania" though if you like more fins get Liuli
Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania" (takes a long time to get the “star effect” though, but well worth the wait.
Otopharynx lithobates
Cyrtocara moorii

Anyways here is a good place to search for types of Malawis http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/index.php

Have fun actually deciding what you want in your tank. I know you will obviously have different ideas on where you want this tank to go, but as you said you are open to suggestions hence I suggested away.

Also I just noticed that you are in South Carolina. If you are anywhere near Summerville SC 29485 United States you might want to look up Erik Dyke at http://www.dykemyster.com Over the last few years I have ordered a large amount of fish from him and never been disappointed, plus this way you wouldn’t have to pay for shipping… (I don’t know if dropping my name with him would help but if you want it send me a pm and I can give it to you if you decide to e-mail him.)

Anyways have fun. (And sorry if this got too long...)

Kevin

looking forward to it..:grinno:

Great to be of help. Now I just have to wait and see what you decide to put in this best.

Have you gotten to cycling the tank yet?

No I had to go out of town last wed and did not return till sun so have not had a chance to do anything more than what is posted .I am going to my lfs today to try to score a 29 gallon sump/fuge to put in place of the 20 gallon fuge so the filtration grows:grinno: I also got the cabnet doors ordered it takes 9 days to make them and I will be getting the plywood this weekend to put on the stand .I am taking my time to do it right instead of rushing it and maaking a mistake:irked: Plus will not have enough help to move this in to the house till september.

Ah, the help factor. Well I can only praise you for your patience. If it was me I know I would have decided to get it to the point of adding fish ASAP, and then add stuff like backgrounds will the fish are in the tank... Obviously not the right way to go, but I can be an impatient guy. Will be watching then.

Well not much of an update but progress none the less. Went to my lfs today and they has 8 29 gal tanks drilled for 25 bucks each si I figured this would be better than the 20 gallon . I will run the waterline 2" below the top and put a strainer on the tube that will return to the sump.I will put oxygenating plants in here to help filter and supplement a little o for the main tank. That brings the total filtration up to 61 gallons:headbang2 Should be getting some plywood this weekend for the stand so more progress then :nilly: :naughty:
