ok, i love mbunas and keep them myself, BUT with a 400 gallon tank you HAVE to go with haps! you could probably mix some male peacocks (like the red shoulders and germans) in there depending what you stock with (as long as you buy them all when they are little. remember that most haps are piscivores-meaning they feed on smaller fish), so i honestly dont know how the peacocks would do in the end...
oh god, if i had a 400 gallon tank.....
i love red empresses, Nim. venustus (you would need 3-4 females for one male so they dont beat up on one female), compressiseps, sci. fryeri. Fos. Rostratus, Plac. electras, bucc. lepturus, Livingstonii's, oto. lithobates
I'd also get a few syno catfish. just remember that haps are strong, open water swimmers, so they really wont need alot of rockwork like the mbuna-but still have some hiding spots for the smaller ones (or the females). Also keep in mind your diet needs (that they are compatible), and i know there is alot of hap info on the internet-just check compatibility (but with a tank that huge you could bend a few rules).
cant wait to see what you do with it! btw, he shouldnt really be too concerned about keeping them all under 10 inches-a few of them will grow a little larger, and he has a tank large enough to compensate their size.
also, here is a really great site i use when needing info on identifying a fish i have, or just general information-its one of the best cichlid sites out there imo and i use it often just to read..they have helped me ID some fish i have and are friendly and VERY knowledgeable.. its
