Peacock tank...400 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright, so hap/peacock tank has been decided, but the client doesn't want too many big fish (by big, he's talking 10"...maybe I should show him this site....) so what types of haps would do well then? I know for peacocks I want German reds and some red shoulders more than likely, but smaller, more active haps?!?!?!

HELP

ok, i love mbunas and keep them myself, BUT with a 400 gallon tank you HAVE to go with haps! you could probably mix some male peacocks (like the red shoulders and germans) in there depending what you stock with (as long as you buy them all when they are little. remember that most haps are piscivores-meaning they feed on smaller fish), so i honestly dont know how the peacocks would do in the end...

oh god, if i had a 400 gallon tank.....

i love red empresses, Nim. venustus (you would need 3-4 females for one male so they dont beat up on one female), compressiseps, sci. fryeri. Fos. Rostratus, Plac. electras, bucc. lepturus, Livingstonii's, oto. lithobates

I'd also get a few syno catfish. just remember that haps are strong, open water swimmers, so they really wont need alot of rockwork like the mbuna-but still have some hiding spots for the smaller ones (or the females). Also keep in mind your diet needs (that they are compatible), and i know there is alot of hap info on the internet-just check compatibility (but with a tank that huge you could bend a few rules).

cant wait to see what you do with it! btw, he shouldnt really be too concerned about keeping them all under 10 inches-a few of them will grow a little larger, and he has a tank large enough to compensate their size.

also, here is a really great site i use when needing info on identifying a fish i have, or just general information-its one of the best cichlid sites out there imo and i use it often just to read..they have helped me ID some fish i have and are friendly and VERY knowledgeable.. its www.cichlid-forum.com

400 Gal blood bath!!!

GO FOR IT!!!

lol it shouldnt be that bad if he doesnt overstock it, and researches compatibility issues.. im jealous! lol..

she...but meh

So what about this:
Capadichromis borleyi (Kadango) x5
Lethrinops sp "Red Cap" x7
Otopharynx lithobates x7
Placidochromis sp "Electra Blackfin" x7
Protomelas spilonotus (Mara Rock) x8
Aulonocara "German Red" x8
Cyrtocara mooriii x10
Placidochromis milomo x5
Sciaenochormis fryeris (Maleri Island) "Iceburg" x8

Is this just to have lots of color or avoid intra species agression? *interested*

All males for color.
If your going to put some peacocks why 8 German Reds?
For peacocks add some
Aulonocara maulana "Bi Color"
Aulonocara stuartgranti (Ngara) "Flametail"
Aulonocara stuartgranti (Wikihi) "Blue Neon"
Aulonocara sp. "Lwanda"
Aulonocara sp. "Stuartgranti Maleri" (Maleri Is.) aka "Yellow Regal"

For small Haps you could get some
Copadichromis sp. "Mloto Undu" aka "Ivory Head"
Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan" (Taiwan Reef) this has all the colors
Protomelas taeniolatus "Super Red Empress"
and as you mentioned Otopharynx lithobates (Zimbawe)

Then maybe some albinos to add some white (Albino Ruby Red,Albino Taiwan Reef or an Albino Eureka Red)
This will get you all the colors of the rainbow.I have some of these fish together and they get along fine but if I had the size of tank you are setting up I would put these and the ones you are thinking of.
