I know that peacock bass live around my area naturally and im planning on purchasing a pond soon (this week hopefully) ive almost got everything planned out just gotta figure out where exactly its gonna be places (outside of course). but the ponds dimensions would be 7'W X 12'L X 1' 1/2"H. that should be around 1000 gals im guessing. Would hte bass have problems with the depth. I know that most ponds and such should be atleast 2' this ones just 6" shorter. I plan on putting a mesh / screen surrounding the sides and top keeping it out of touch of birds and leaves and such. If the depth wont be a problem how many pbass could i put in? Would they go well with sm bass? I was aiming for a native tank since i could get Pbass SMbass Mayan (red terrors?) cichlids, Blue gill id try fitting most of these fish but i really want the peacocks. Feeding wont really be a issue since i get feeder goldfish for 1cent each. then later if all goes well id try converting to krill or somthing? So i guess mainly i was wondering how many full grown peacocks could live fine in this size pond / outdoor tank

I'd assume at FULL grown 7-9 would be a healthy number for that size of a pond, that is if you do intend to have other fish in there as well. I personally would get 9 and call them the Wu Tang Clan!:headbang2

Good luck, can't wait to hear how things go

First off...let me just point out that Pbass do NOT live around your are naturally. Now that I've got the jealousy off my chest...great set it up and post some pictures.

Where do you get feeders for 1 cent each!

Your plan looks good. I once kept 7 breeding pairs of PB in an 8 foot above ground pool with 18 inches high of water to breed. Gave it up and wisened up. It was much easier collecting baby PBs in the canals and lakes around here.:D

The only way you would be able to keep them alive during winter is to have a heater. They are tropical fish and prefer warmer temps, Having a 1ft ( or what ever the h" was) wouldent be to good imo because it would get to cold.

my friends uncle just got into a feeder distribution buisness and we get them for the price that the stores pay so it all works out well or i could do 50 cent for a dozen fat head minnows.

yea thats what somone was telling me so hopefully ill get a heater quick. know of any good heaters?

My problem with it is how are you going to regulate the temp changes between day and night? Day time in the summer is gonna be hotter than night time. And then the winter will be cooler and the night cold. Are you going to be able to keep the temp. steady?

i figured that since id probly be getting the pbass from the lake right behind my house that theyd already be used to this but then remembering the depth of the pond the temp would be diff from the lake. But also the pond would be placed in shade with enough space for lighting to get in. So maybe before i add fish id just see how the water temp would be on a normal basis? If i wouldnt do pbass i thouht about doing a native tank of blue gill and large mouth or small mouth. wouldnt the bass be able to adapt to the colder temperature easier?

They can handle a temp change of a period of time. Example starts at 90 than over 5 hours goes to 86 would be fine.

That's cool if they're found in the wild in the same area then you should be ok. Someone said they weren't so I thought maybe they really weren't in that area. Bass like high temps like 82-84, not sure in the wild there in florida what the lowest temp is. But midnight was going to do the same thing about two weeks ago on a much bigger scale and juantumad added some good info on temps and stuff you should look for it. it was in this section.
