4 ways to pellet train the datnoids from my experience.

1. starve it (possibility of death)
2. catch the datnoid shove pellet in their mouth (Cruel but it does the job at most cases after few tries)
3. Garlic suppliment that helps boost metabolism. ( it works but takes time)
4. when datnoids get alittle bigger, or you had them for a while they will come up to the tank when its feeding time. first you show them what they want. they will get ready to snap once the food drops. in one hand have what the datnoids usually eat on the other pinch of pellet. you have to let the datnoids get used to the routine. its like push and pull back method. pretend your dropping what they want. and they will snap thinking you dropped something in the water. they will look at you like wtf ive been faked. on the second attempt when the datnoids are close to the top of the water drop in the pellets. it takes a few tries and it works.

ive had close to 12 datnoids 9 of them were on pellets. always note that its not gonna happen in a day or 2 you have to keep up with the routine and let them get used to it. and eventually it will be rooted in their mind that pellet is the only thing thats available. after that they will take it naturally. in between make sure you give them what they want and slowly pull back and go with pellets.

Good tips jdmxlove I got them eating 1-2 hikari food sticks every couple days petty soon they should eat it on a regular basis

i wouldn't even think of starving before they reach a size of 3 inch or larger you could seriously stunt or hurt the fish as they can be very stubborn and may not eat for weeks maybe even months at which time they become easy pray and are likely to contract disease

my advise is have a selection of foods ready for them and if they start getting to thin just cave and give them a good meal then start over. I have found the best way is to run warmer water (above 80) to get their metabolism up and mix it in slowly. feed pellet first every day, feeding live every other day and decreasing the live food by adding a day between live feeds every couple of weeks, they will start taking pellet eventually and its less of a shock then just completely waiting till they eat just the pellet. its best to give your fish options and a variety of foods not just pellet or live and/or freeze dried

for a fish that is as slow growing as a dat i dont thing 2-3 weeks of starving would stunt growth

its not getting dats to eat pellets thats the hard thing its making the owner stop feeding other foods and giving in after 5-10 days thats the hard part of getting them on pellets

I am having a first experience with dats (8 IT´s, 3 with 4-5" and 5 with 2"), and the ones I keep (for only a week...) came to me already eating mussels and prawns, but I´ve been doing the following:

- feeding only with the lights on in the afternoon to get them used to the light (started eating this way in the 2nd day after coming home, the first time I tried);
- starting with 1 or 2 pellets (massivore cut in half) when they´re more hungry and excited, then mussels and praws and in the confusion, once in a while another pellet;

after 2-3 days at home the little ones started to take the pellets in for a second, but then spit them. One of bigger ones followed.
Yesterday, for the first time, one of the little guys ate one (1/2) pellet and didn´t spit it. Some of the others (at least 3 that I´ve noticed) are already "spiters".

Most likely it was luck, but I will keep up with the same procedure as it seems to be working

I think your on track. I have 10 and they seem to get into a feeding frenzy and one will go after a pellet then the rest will hit the pellets. Some eat them some are spitters but they all seem to know it's food. I under feed in this period and they will fight for the food and eventually all will be eating the pellets. I think the key is having a bunch of dats, they seem to be aware of each other and are always watching.

Got three of my five on pellets, but I'm winning the battle so far the other two are taking pellets in but spitting them out pretty soon they'll all be on pellets.

They'll all eat soon enough. Mine group of 5 little ones (4") took 4 months...
