I have both filters, and I personally believe the 350 is the better buy, big als is selling them for 14.99, so you could buy like 3 of them for what youd pay for 1 emp400. 1 on 1, Id say the emp 400 takes the cake, especially in the media options department...but 3- 350s definatly beats one emp400.

Somehow I don't think 3 could fit on a 75
but 15 bucks for the 350, can't beat taht price, lol

Well, lol ~ yes and no.. Sure you have three filters going at any one point and time, then when its time to clean and do a media rinse or change, if staggered you can have two 'used' running an one new, also at any given time...

But then your looking at media when the time comes. First off your not getting the extra cartridge (for lets say BioMax) plus the cost of three filters running defies the point.. your not saving any money. Think both power, and the price in media...

Sure I'll agree more filtration is ALWAYS a plus.. but then again, you have to step back an look at the big picture.. Three for the price of one, that you don't get near the same filtration, plus the bill of changing and using.. I think, in the long run... both have their ups and downs, pros and cons.

I would still probably go with the emperor 400 since they are still cheap for a filter...

Actually your right, 3 peguin 350s vs one emp400 you do not get near the same filtration...you get better, especially considering you can put your pads in the front slot on each penguin and put ceramic rings behind the pad or something of that nature, there is alot of ways you can even the field. Sure the emp is a superior filter, no question there, but its not 3 times the filter. You are certainly right about both having their ups and downs...but a single emp 400 cannot compare to 3 penguin 350s, it just cant. And if money for powering a filter ever becomes an issue, you should probably look into another hobby, I have bookoos of things going on my tanks and ive never noticed a jump on the electric bill.

Yuppers.. Gonna Agree with Komodo here.. There is a price diff. close to $10.00 Personally I hate HOB filters, however on my 125 I do currently run two Emp.400's, along with an XP3.Don't get me wrong, Komodo brings up a VERY valid point.. Everyone will ALWAYS have there own opinion. With the 350, sure you do have less parts to play with, an sure that can be a good thing. However with the 400, like mentioned before you do have the spray bar, that you personally can control, setting the speed of how many rotations the actual bio-wheel will spin, rather then the 350 where your leaving it up to the water movement leaving the filter. I HAVE seen that you have to keep an eye on the 350's to continue to check if the wheel is moving, otherwise killing off the beneficial bacteria. On that note, with the extra cartridge in the 400, as komodo mentioned, you have the option to add pretty much whatever you want. In his and my case, BioMax. You could just add another blue sponge/carbon.Also, it is larger.. you will always have MORE water housed in the tray at any given time. For me it was an easy decision. For close to $10.00 I know I am getting the better filter (personal). I never have to worry about the wheel, I have better Bio filtration, and more water capacity. It's both you coin, and your tank.Run what you wish.
I hope this helps.Taylor

I am simply just trying to help the guy. We are getting off the topic here.
Yes, I am fully aware three 350's is far better then one 400.

I also know one 400 has cheaper media

I also know, that being a HOB filter uses next to no power. I was simply stating facts. In the long run, eventually they will equal out in the price dept.

I also stated either above or in another post.. that this is simply my point of view, offering a suggestion.

That there are a lot more people out there with one filter or the other filter.
That both filters runs pros and cons. That at the end of the day, everyone will have their own opinion.

IF the op has the coin to get three 350's all the power to him/her.
IF the op has the coin just to get one or the other, my 'suggestion' was the 400, being a suggestion ~ it was my opinion. And only that.

Both filters are good. Some people have a problem with the 400's, some with the 350's.

The op made a thread on one or the other, looking/seeking advice and info.
... As a member, I replied.

Thanks

Taylor

I'm pretty sure if you have a canopy on a 75 gallon, you can't fit 3 350's.

Prices must be different in the states.
Since 350's are 45 each and 400's are 60 each
at bigals

It would be 3 350's (costing more) or 2 400's
I would pick the two 400's with no question (since thats what I did)

Anyway, people pick different filters for different reasons.
Odds are if you really need 3 350's on a 75 gallon (which is the tank we are talking about here, someone wants to know what they should get for their 75 gallon) then you may want to change your stocking since that is more than enough filtration for a 75 gallon.

the 400 has the spray bar ive heard of peoples biowheels getting stuck
and you can customize it cool

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/power_filter_tricks_v.php

I assume the bubbler in the filter will give you amazing oxygen ppm

and if you customize the price of changing the filter media will go down cause you wont have to change as often

Neat article

I think I might get one 350 and one 400 cause I can get the 350 at 14 dollars !! and pay the 37 for the other one cuase the difference seems to be the spray bar
