Penguin 350 power filter:

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not too long ago I got the same scolding for my 75. 2 Green terrors, 2 JD's 3 Blood Parrots and one 9" Pleco.

Here is my advice,

1. Drop the attitude, All here are Fish Fanatics and just want to help.
2. Drop the attitude, Accept that you do not know it all and that is why you came for advice
3. Drop the attitude...
4. Accept that it is not about you, If you look at them as just fish then give them to someone who cares for living creatures, and give away the tank.
5. Oh did I mention to drop the attitude.

Unless you did as stated above and add water from the previous tank then you did not cycle the tank, and it is overstocked. I worked at a pet store and NEVER told people to cycle for just 1 day.

What you are doing there is like trying to filter a public swiming pool with a kiddie pool filter. As stated above if you are going to keep all those fish in that small tank then get another HOB, then add a canister. All my inhabitants of my 75 are going into a 300.

Nobody is trying to scold, we all just want to help,

Good Luck,

Bear

See the rest of you could have given me constructional criticism like this guy, instead of scolding me and such. Most of you get way to into this, you must have no life, you probably feel like a BA talking like this over the web, and that's the only way you'll ever feel so cool.

Why is anyone even bothering to help this guy? If he's going to act like that, just let all his fish die. He'll quit the hobby soon enough.

Look bro all these people are trying to do is help you and you snaping back with an attitude. You asked why your water was cloudy and you were giving the reason but your not wanting to accept it. You said you cycled your tank for one day and night. How exactly did you do that? Most people like to do a fishless cycle which can tank a month or two. Alot of us have done a fishin cycle which still takes about the same amount of time but theres a lot more work involved. The bacteria in the bottle most of the time doesnt work because its all dead. The only way your tank could of been cycled that fast is if the filter you got was from another mature tank. Even if this was the case Im sure it can't handle the load you have. I have a 75 with 1 fullgrown oscar and 3 clown loaches and I have a pengiun 350 and a emperor 400. I dont care how small you say the fish are your tank is overstocked. When they get a little bigger you will have world war 3 in your tank. The reason your water is cloudy is because you have an ammonia spike and its in the middle of a cycle.

^ ditto. everyone just wants to help you. For the most part, we are all experienced to an extent, so you should listen to what people have to say. btw, your tank is not cycled. Next time, just take the advice people gave you.

For a lot of us fishkeeping is our passion it is what we do and what we enjoy. The reason people got on you is because you acted like you knew it all and we didnt know anything. But in reality its the other way around. If you want to learn something and make this right listen to what we say dont try to correct us. Alot of us started off the same way you did maybe not this bad but still. Even with more filtration your gonna have to rehome most of those fish.

This should be required reading for anyone even thinking about being responsible for an aquarium

I have listened to most of the people on here, and am working on the filter situation, I just think that people could say it a little nicer.

Advice is worth what you pay for it. You don't owe me a thing.
I do hope your fish have a long and happy life and if you show the same passion for them that you displayed in this thread they should do just fine.

Message boards are full of "know it alls". They all have an attitude, and rarely help anyone with the mass of knowledge they have amassed. You have to weed thru the unhelpful and look for the helpful no matter which person it comes from.

You called the fish "my fish" in your original question. You owned them before this tank? Is the old tank still running? If so, take the filters and substrate and water and put it all in the new tank. Water change immediately no matter what else. If you dont have an old tank with dirty filters and substrate then go to petco and get some "cycle in a bottle" treatment. Get a test kit, when the ammo or nitrite gets too high change more water until it evens out. Oscars are pretty tough to kill....most catfish also are pretty hardy. They should be ok. Pet stores will tell you its fine to set up your tank and then wait a day and put fish in it....But they are in the business of selling fish. Cycling takes 10-30 days depending on how you do it. In reality if you had set up your tank and got perhaps 1 fish or two , then got a couple more every other week it may have been better. I think longterm youll be ok with the fish you have chosen, I dont believe you can overstock a tank (within reason). The problem is that is a ton of waste for unestablished filters to break down all at once.

If its a brand new tank then dont feel bad, most of us did the exact same thing with our first tanks.

Stop vacuuming the gravel until bacteria has built up in the tank. use your vacuum to change the water but dont suck up all the junk at the bottom. The good bacteria that grows on your gravel will need that to grow. After your all cycled and readings are all 0s then resume vacuuming.

Stop feeding. Fish can easily go 3-4 days without food. Feed them just enough to survive until cycle is done.
