I was just down at a local river and was packing out a backpack and an arm load of river rock and I walked by a group of people who went nuts on me for taking rocks from the river. They followed me all the way to my car taunting me and giving me all they could. Idiots!
Anybody else ever have this happen. I have had dirty looks with a pick up load of driftwood but no interaction

I haven't had any issues like that but people have asked me if I was looking for lost sunglasses or something like that. lol

I collect driftwood from the nearby river all of them time. I get more 16 year olds asking for cigarettes than anything else. Really? I have asthma. People just don't care about the state of the river where I live, unless they're on the conservation staff, which I support. Just a few rocks by one person isn't going to do any harm.

I understand where they're coming from because if everyone took a little bit, it would all be gone but at the same time, everyone isn't taking so I don't personally see a problem, and I'm a huge eco-fanatic haha.

many places have laws prohibiting taking rocks and other natural resources to prevent changing the natural landscape of the area

Typically local, state, federal parks etc.. have laws where you can not remove a even dead leaf!
But some over react.
