I am opposed to spending any amount of time in Jail!

Make sure you stone them hard enough so that when they wake up, they can't remember your face clearly then

Things are tougher here in the Northwest. It's like somebody took the stick-in-the-butt attitude of a yuppie and used to to fuel hippie sentiments. You can't pick up anything without getting reminded about the rules. At the dog beach. Where dogs crap in the surf and it washes up on shore all day. Where there's almost nothing but irritating invasive species anyway, and the environment is comprised mostly of sandal straps and cigarette butts. Yeah, I boil everything I get there unless it's alive.

Some strategies we've found effective are:

We act casual and stuff 2' pieces of driftwood into backpacks.

When I collect seaweed and amphipods for my tank, I do it while jogging to confuse people into not asking me what I'm doing. Movement of any kind makes it difficult for the would-be assailant to formulate a thoroughly snide remark. It interferes with their delivery.

Bring a friend. These coffee-sipping scenesters and eco-wannabes are somehow diffused by plurality.

Other than that, just point out the beer cans and crap logs in the water and ask why this stuff is here if they care so much.

Thats lame. As one person said, if everyone was taking them then it could cause a problem but I hate when things are protected that shouldnt be. Here in florida it seems we often make this mistake, funny how the tropical marine fish are lightly protected and don't seem to suffer one bit from hobbysits yet you need permits out the wazoo to catch and keep (alive) all the wonderful freshwater fish available here. Another prime example is the key deer which are now overpopulated yet still on the endangered list just because of their limited habitat yet now majority of them die not from natural causes, but from getting hit by cars.
