in reality, you dont actually know what youre talking about with the wild hoeses in NORTH AMERICA, or anything about the ecology of where they live.

i am a senior at one of NORTH AMERICA'S top wildlife colleges, studying wildlife management. i know what im talking about a lot better than you do.

i don't know much but i definitely know that you know another way than just killing them. for someone who joined MFK, i know you care about creatures and you do NOT think like those political bastards. Now please tell us, is there any other possible solution than just killing them?

i know animals don't think like we do. but it is our job to do to them the most humane things because we are superior beings.

@ chloe, that's why i rewrote it :D
@ kafiltafiisch, i am a native species of my land but my people kills everything, how horrible right?

cheers,
jk

One last tid bit before I'm off to bed...Syko, I believe she was refering to the fact that you have not yet graduated...not that you were lying...

LoL, luckily you dont see this outcry about wild hogs. Same thing, but I guess horses are just cuter so they get the love. Hogs are more fun to hunt then horses though, horses are pretty easy to hunt!

i totally see what youre saying, and dont get all mad at me for my reply. i DO care greatly for our environment and its wildlife, thats why i do what i do. im trying to do my part for the preservation of our national heritage, and that heritage is our wildlife and wilderness. i want nothing more than to see this continent in the state it was in 500-700 years ago, before Europeans came to the continent and started exploiting the resources here. from that standpoint, there is only the option of removal of non-native species to restore ecosystems to their prior state.

unfortunately for the horses, that means removal from public lands. now, im not saying we should fly around with helicoptors and machine guns or anything. the BLM is actually using a plan that isnt too bad, they are rounding up the horses, selling the sellable ones, and killing the sick, old, and unmanageable animals. the holding time is the time in which they evaluate the animals, and make a decision, then the ones deemed adoptable are held until they are adopted.

what people dont realize is that 33,000 animals is not really that many, especially compared to other species that are being killed in numbers far greater. also, people dont realize how sick wild animals are. everyone sees the award winning shots of a lone stallion on a ridge or whatever, but what you dont see is the upclose shots. no one sees the parasitic infections they have or the rottinng diseases that live on and in them. in the case of many of the horses that are killed, death is a relieaf from the eternal suffering of insect larva eating through the walls of their intestines and muscles.

there are "more humane" methods for killing them, there are several chemicals that can be injected instead of being spiked in the head, and i agree that those more humane methods should be used whenever possible.

i brought up wild hogs earlier in this thread, but youre right, they are not as cute as horses, so no one really cares. haha! imagine the controversy if people tried to open a wild horse season! LOL

We have wild horses down here too. Every so often the need arises to cull them as they are hugely damaging to the environment and they have no predators. Not only do they eat various rare plants, but they trample those they don't. The large herds also cause erosion. Inevitably a few people get all upset about it, but they don't seem to realise that these are not cute little ponies. They are quite honestly dirty, mangy, parasite ridden pests. They do offer them up for adoption for those who want them for god only knows what reason.

33,000 is a crapload of horses to try and rehome. Where are they meant to keep them while they wait to be adopted?

It's all well and good to love animals, and of course I do too, but the fact remains that there is no other realistic alternative. It's quite simple: 33,000 excess horses + nowhere public to move them + not enough people willing to adopt them = lots of dead horses.

if they have no where to go they need to be recycled properly into the ecosytem at least
