People - particularly party boat mates - who fillet fish alive

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've always thought, if we have the ability to be humane, why should we be cruel? Unfortunately so many people haven't quite made the jump to thinking a fish is a living creature with the ability to feel pain. This reminds me of those videos of frying the fish alive...I don't know if it's appropriate to post them.

Some fish die quickly, and others don't. You barly have to hit a coho salmon to kill it, we joke that you just have to look at thenm funney, but a catfish might need two or three hits . When I was a kid my brother caught a 18 lb carp & the 93 year old naibor wanted it, now I admit he was old but he still got arround good and was still able to swing a short handled sledge hammer. Well he hit that carp in the head twice and it was still alive, on the third wack the 5 lb hammer went through to the picknik table and of corse the fish was dead.
I usualy only keep panfish & I slice their backbones behind their head as I clean them, then you don't even get nerve twitching.

Most fishermen & hunters are overly defensive because of groups like PETA who don't really care about animals or they would all stop driveing cars. I bet I killed more living things in one year driving (bugs) then I did in my lifetime of fishing & hunting.

Most fishermen & hunters do care about the creatures they take and want to do it humanely. Thats why in magazines you see one shot one kill articals, barbless hooks, & ceatch & release fishing.

Sure, clubbing the fish with a priest is more humane in our own mind. Wake up people, fishing, hunting or any meat eating is not HUMANE, if you want to be humane, be a vegetarian.

Hooking a fish in the mouth, releasing it, or killing it, is not humane. I'll post more in my blog to elude censorship.

I posted this on my local fishing forum, and I got flamed for it, so I decided I'll post in somewhere where people actually care about fish, good ol' MFK:headbang2

I notice this on every party boat I go on. They clean, gut, and fillet the fish alive, then toss the carcass aside, which sometimes is STILL breathing. I don't get why it's so hard to keep a little hammer by the fillet tables, and use it to "put out" the fish before they fillet it. It's like an extra 3 seconds added to the process. My friend carries a PVC pipe with an 8oz lead weight jammed in the end for such a purpose, to instantly "put out" fish he catches. Supposedly it tastes better, since when fish struggle to death, they build up lactic acid fermentation in their body.

But I just think that gutting and filleting a fish that is still obviously alive is just downright cruel.

Opinions?

(Note: Keep if civil. It did not stay civil when I posted it on the local fishing forum. There is no reason to turn this into a flamefest. I think this has potential to be a great discussion. Unfortunetaly, it also has potential to be a great flamewar, but let's not.)

I was just out on a party boat yesterday. There was no cleaning of live fish. After caught every fish was put on ice for the remainder of the day. I came home with lots of snappers, 3 different species and none were alive after being on ice. This has been the same on every deep sea fishing trip I have taken.

that's a pretty good treatment and keeps the fish fresh. Many southern california boats, we just toss them into gunny sacs and they slowly suffocate, and by days end sometimes fish are not even fresh!

Then again, remember the movie "Titanic" when Jack Dawson or Leo in the icy cold holding on the the floating plank, then slowly freezes? I would prefer a different method of death if I had the chocie

I saw a red neck pour a beer into the mouth of a bass while holding the gills shut, then drank the beer out of the fish.. Was kinnda gross but at least the fish got a cold one before he died..

If it's a fish I'm keeping to eat it goes straight in the cooler, if it's cut bait, well, sorry fish. I often Butterfly Pinfish when Flounder fishing or blue gills when catfish fishing, so I guess i'm one of those condoning the cruel behavior. I understand where you're coming from, but the way i use em if they aren't kicking they're useless to me

keep the sacks wet and you will be good to go. this is a funny thread.

Indeed funny it is. If you want to fillet them, just cut off the head and fillet away. People like to bleed the fish because it improves the taste a whole lot, seriously. Most fisherman club them on their head so it is easier to deal with them only, not because they wanted to put them out of their misery. Sad but true...:D
