Peoples thoughts on convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Convicts were the first cichlids that I successfully bred. I assumed all Cichlids were so easy to breed after that. I was way off! Watching their courtship and breeding behavior also got my wife interested in my tanks. Cons are very tough but due to their size they can usually be easily managed in various sized tanks. They are great fish IMO. If a person has the means to deal with the onslaught of fry, a pair of Cons is very cool to keep.

I kept them for many years , had fun with them.
Back when I kept convict cichlids, there was not the selection we have now.
Now I find if I were to ever keep cichlids again, I'd like a more colorful and possibly peaceful species.

I am the proud father of a whole bunch of tiny little convict fry. convicts are such wariors, its incredible how they fight, my two jumped on my flowerhorn/trimac (not sure which one he is, but he is getting a blue stream accross the top of his body so he may be a flowerhorn) they did a job on him, he is hard headed and kept comining back for more. Covicts are awsome little fighters and parents.

I don't know how they can be underrated. They're as common in the hobby as any cichlid out there.

Cons are awesome...easy to keep and even easier to breed. Some people don't like how they look but I've seen some awesome ones with lots of orange(females) and blue coloration near the bottom(maybe hrpxcon hybrids?)

my female has the orange on her,she is so awesome to have in this tank, she goes for who she knows she can attack.Yesterday her and the salvini went at it for about 10 minutes, then she tried to take on the Severum, then she went at my 4 inch green terror.Even though she had no chance against a 4 in half inch severum and a 4 inch green terror, she sure shows she can fight.

My cons have some pretty colors. I feed all the fry to my TSN. Convicts are what got my gf to come around to the idea of keeping fish in general.

Yes convicts are brave, I use them (all the same sex) to help my large or more shyer cichlid get comfortable in the tank. I do llike convicts thought for their bravery...

Nobody mentioned, Neets. IMO they are killers...

They're common because they're so readily available. But yes, they are underrated. Probably because of being so common. :grinno:
