perch?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there really isnt any place close by that i can catch perch. Also i dont think i will ever catch a 2-3inch perch. once the basement is done it will be climate controlled but with only a few vents for heat and ac.

i have three yellow perch in my tank. i have had them for three months and not a problem yet. i don't have a chiller on my tank. they get along well with my walleye and blue gills. i feed them once a week, three dozen minnows, and about half way through the week i feed them a dozen crawlers. they will not touch pellets at all so don't even try. they were 2 to 4 inches when i bought them and are about 4 to 6 inches now.my tank is 180 gallons, 8 ft long x 2 ft tall x 18 inches deep. good luck

They will take pellets eventually, but it could take a little while. It may help to put them with fish that already accept pellets and they may figure it out quicker. As mentioned earlier, they don't need a chiller and can take temps into the 80s without much trouble.

Also, one random thing I thought about, not that you will be handling them much, but when you do, watch out for the operculum. As you may or may not know, they have a razor sharp edge on the back of it. After handling several thousand at the hatchery, I have experienced more than my share of what basically feel like paper cuts from them.

alright that sounds good then so eventually they will need bigger tank so i got the 210 for when they are bigger. i might get the 72gallon bowfront which leads me to another question. would i be able to keep the perch with dats? since the perch could tolerate the temp up to the 80s.
yeah their gill plates are sharp i got back from ice fishing in wisconsin yesterday and me and my buddies caught about 120 but only kept the bigger ones so we kept around 60 and they are thawing out so i me and my buddy could make them tomarrow.

They can tolerate the temps but its not in there comfort range so I would say no.

I agree. By "tolerate", we mean if it gets that hot for a few weeks out of the year, it wont kill them, but as for long term conditions, I'd keep them in the 60s to mid 70s

I diagree...I have an 11"er that I keep at 76-78 degrees with a redbay snook and a couple catfish and he readily and greedily eats freeze dried krill and presoaked pellets. The key for me was having floating food that washed around with the current from the filter to keep it moving. I got him when he was 3.5" and have had him for about 5yrs. I wouldn't go any less than a 75 and only that small if you're keeping a single specimen without other tankmates.
