Personality fish for 20gal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't mix apple snails with anything that is tempted to bite their eyes and antennae out. Convicts and puffers aren't compatible with snails. There is a sticky in Freshwater Invertebrates forum for snail safe tankmates.

male convict as someone mentioned is the best bet, they definitely have good personalities and all the other qualities mentioned. Another option that is less common would be something like a red hump eartheater

...

Just for reference, here is a list of some fish that will work well with most snails.

Loaches

Hillstream loaches
Kuhli loaches

Both work well with snails although the kuhlis may just make a meal out of snails smaller than their mouths. Several other species especially those of botiine genus tend to prey on snails. Believe it or not, invertebrates are their primary diet so it is not surprising to see them attempting to pry off the snails to eat them.

Cypriniformes
Harlequin rasboras (Trigonostigma heteromorpha)
Hengeli rasboras (Trigonostigma hengeli)
Espei rasboras (Trigonostigma espei)
White cloud mountain minnows
Celestial pearl danios
Rasbora boraptensis
Boraras maculatus
Boraras merah
Boraras brigittae
Siamese Algae Eaters (Crossocheilus siamensis)
Garra flavatra
Garra cambodgiensis
Garra taeniata

Anabantids
Honey gouramis
Sparkling gouramis
Licorice gouramis
Chocolate gouramis
Samurai gouramis
Pearl gouramis

The only issue is most species mentioned above prefer acidic waters so I am sure shell erosion would be a problem there although these fish won't bother them in any way possible.

Catfish (aside from corydoras and plecos)
Hara hara
Glass catfish
Agamyxis pectifrons
Platydoras costatus

Silver-tipped Tetra(Hasemania nana)
X-ray Tetra(Pristella maxillaris)

Pencilfish (all species)
Hatchetfish (all species)

Cichlids
This seems a hit or miss. The following listed are possible but don't keep your hopes up they will thrive together.

Discus
Blue rams
Bolivian rams
Apistogrammas
Keyholes

Livebearers (not all will work)
Guppies
Platies
Swordtails
Mollies

Others
Rainbowfish

Hope that helps. If you have anything to add, please feel free.

MALONE: IMO those are a bit too ordinary for me...and not enough personality :P
Lupin: Okay...I guess I can scrap that D:

If given the choice, I would get a Convict. They have tons of personality.

This might be pushing the size of the tank but I would go with a Firemouth. I've had a very personable one that used to play fight with me by puffing up. He always needed attention and food. I know they can seem shy sometimes but you just have to condition the fish in the beginning to overcome that shyness. Don't let the fish think he has anything to be afraid of and make sure he knows that you are the one that provides him with food. It also doesn't hurt to have the fish close to you a lot. I kept my Firemouth at bedside.

Okay...so right now it's around 90% convicts, 0% puffers.
I don't want african butterflyfish either anymore :P

For the two of you who said guppies, was that meant to be offensive? Because although I do keep Endler's Livebearers, it sounded a bit offensive. Sorry if I took it wrong.

hairdog, If I could find a decent festivum, I'd consider it...but if I can't I guess ill go with convicts. Festivums look real neat, but I think this thread has done a good job making me lean towards the convict side...(plus the temptation of wanting cichlid fry)

Fry: I'm not too sure about that...I think aesthetically, a convict-like cichlid is what I'm leaning towards this time, thanks, though.

UKNOWN_MALONE: Cool, what barbs do you have? My starters were swordtails and then when they died I had some tiger barbs for a while, do yours ever nip?
