Are cichla as easy to breed as other cichlids? Like Red Devils? I bred these like crazy once...

Also, how hard are they to pair up? How long should it take?

I am thinking of giving the pair (once I find a male) 1/3 of the tank, and I might leave the eggs/fry in the tank until they all hatch...then I will keep a breeder net at the top of the tank with the fry in it. I will then let them grow to a good size, move to a 10 gallon, then to a 55, then to a 80...etc

Are the egg tumblers needed, or are those only for if you remove the eggs from the flat surface they were laid on?

Is there anything else specific I should know? I have read a few of the cichla breeders threads, and what to do...just give me some info before I try to start.

can someone answer these^

pairing is the hardest part IMO, best to get 4-6 and keep together from babies until a pair forms, how big is the tank you would give a 3rd too? i wouldnt even attempt the breeder net, trust me;), they will just smash through it, best to wait until there free swimming then scoop out like 2 3rds and throw them in a ten with the same water as the original tank, if the eggs are adhesive then you will probably cause more damage then good trying to put them in a tumbler, i wouldnt bother with a tumbler, just let the parents do there part until your ready to move the fry.

i dont know what your tank size or stocking is but when the fry do hatch they will swarm the whole tank so be mindful off intakes and tankmates

i dont know wether it set them off or not but right before my second spawn i cleaned my tank and then left the lights off for the better part of 2 days, then bam eggs

hope that helps!

ive been experimenting on what i can do to get them in the mood lol, ill let you know if anything works

alright, I might get some little guys to raise...are yours same batch or two different? I would give them a third to a half of the 150 once they find a spot...so the others dont bother...

still deciding on a large female, or a bunch of little guys...

mine were from 2 different batches , i got 2 wc perus, then 2 more about 2 months later, 2 paired after about a year, then i got rid of the 2 spares

if you do split the tank make sure theres enough room for the male to get away from the female, if they act anything like mine, the female protects the eggs from all, male included, the male will protect the fry from other fish still just from farther away

Maybe I will buy a female if it is spawning already...

I will look out for some babies soon as well...

i would look for the babies if i was you, even if you do find a big female and a big male, theres still no guarantee they will bond

Alright, maybe I will also try to breed my two ocell sp. (Cichla sp Guiana, and the Cichla sp. Guyana.)

im doing the same thing with my rio metas that i did with my perus, if i get lucky i will get a pair out of them too, then i would like some kels but there impossible to find down here
