Red Devils post about owls got me thinking about the one I took care of for a while and I did not want to hijack her thread so I thought I might share some info on the one I kept

This was Popeye, an eastern screech owl, He was hit by a car and lost an eye (thus his name). the person that hit him brought him into the museum that i worked at and gave him to us to take care of. After a few nights at the vets office, he was put on display at the museum (since he was deemed unable to return to the wild because of his new lack of depth perception) but he still needed extra care so my boss and I would take turns bringing him home and watching after him. He was a picky eater and only ate every once and a while (we fed him mice that were injected with any medicine and vitamins that he needed) but he became quite tame and personable. He was at the museum for just under 4 years.

Recently, I got word from my old boss that he passed away while trying to mate with his girlfriend who broke his neck during the process (what a B).

Ever since then I have always wanted to become a falconer but I just don't have the time and resources to put into that goal yet.

anyone else here into falconry or keep raptors?

Nice. Here's the one I found blown out of a tree during a big storm. I just picked him up, and took him home. IMO, owls are the best raptors to keep. Very personable, and laid back. I want to go through the process of getting my licenses, since CA won't allow you keep raptors without them. My wife's dad kept red tailed hawks which were cool, but I liked my little screech owl better.

Unfortunately, a coworker hit an owl with his truck on the way to work last month. It was stuck in his grill when he arrived (40 miles later). It obviously didn't survive. I removed it and could not believe how beautiful these guys are. He (she?) was in really nice condition and I put it in the fish food freezer, just because. Very cool owls guys!
