Pet Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are most finicky, they need well oxygenated moving cold clean clear water to thrive. I know rainbow trouts are popular fish but buying a pet rainbow trout is impossible. Fish and Chips super healthy dog food recipe utilizes all natural rainbow trout and sweet potato as its primary ingredients.

I read on a hatchery website rainbow's preferred temp is 21C. In 3 years they are expected to be 4.5 kilos in 3 years, steelhead are expected to be 10, so in 3 years a rainbow should be 2 pounds, plus they are more hardy then other trout, so if you want to keep a trout in a tank this would be the easiest, not that it would be easy.

a friend of mine kept a few in his pond. they all jumped out within a month (probably because poor 02). they were almost impossible to see and they ate most of his goldfish.

if you're going to keep trout to see them, keep them in a large tank or get golden rainbows. cabella's in hamburg PA has an enormous indoor pond full of huge golden rainbow trout. i bet if you called them they might be able to put you in touch with whoever setup or maintains their fish.

We have a local pond who has a kids fishing tourney every year and they stock the pond full of rainbow trout. My son (4) and I caught two about 10" long and brought them home. We had a 180g native tank setup with some sunfish, crayfish, and blue gill. Filtration was a sump wet/dry with mag 24 return pump water movement was aided by two 350gph power heads. We had a 29 gallon under the tank and kept minnows in would just throw net fulls into the main tank and all fish thrived for about 6 months till I sold the tank. I released the fish back into the pond where they were caught in which I later found out DNR wasn't thrilled about. Water temp was pretty consistently in the lower to mid 70's. Substrate was pool filter sand and had a good amount of limestone in the bottom half of the tank for the smaller fish to hide.
