As you enter the store you probably hear the following mantra. "Welcome to Petsmart. Our selections are better than Wal-mart, but our Philosophy is the same."

Example: I went in to order two 90 gallon aquariums and a 40 gallon breeder, but was informed that they can not order anything they do not actually carry in the store. I Noticed two 75 Gallons that I could substitute for the 90's I wanted. So I asked if they could knock anything off of the price if I bought all three tanks today. NO! They would definitely lose their job if they were to discount anything off of the marked prices. Not discouraged by their negativity I explained that not only would I be purchasing the tanks, but I would have to buy filters, heaters and accessories. (They know I have been buying them out of stock on their Rena 300 Watt Smart Heaters and that I spend a couple of hundred dollars every time I enter their store). This did not move the manager in the least. He really could care less whether I buy any of my equipment from his franchise store or my locally owned LFS. I smiled as I thought of how much this sounded like Wal-Mart.

I do find that their actual employees (non managers) are really trying to be helpful, but do not ask them any questions about what is in any of the boxes. They will help you pick out the prettiest fish, but in Destin Florida this is just a seasonal job to fill a resume as a summer/winter job. One step up from "I worked at Wal-Mart in the Pet products, sales and supply department.

So, you get what you pay for.

A few weeks ago they did give me the FULL refund prices from my receipt for my defective Top Fin Heaters as trade-ins for the much more expensive Rena Smart 300 Watt Heaters. The Top Fin heaters (even on the lowest settings) quit shutting off. Rena Smart Heaters are the best quality aquarium heaters I have ever owned and I got them all at Petsmart.

Perhaps their managers need to graduate from school before being offered a management position. It would be nice if they actually studied marine biology, economics, marketing and sales, but with all the other departments at Pet Smart, how can they be expected to know anything about marine biology? The most expensive fish they carry is the 14.99 baby Oscar and their favorite fish is the Tiger Barb.

Sorry to slam PetSmart, but the manager should have at least tried to make the sale. Even if he could not order the 90's or discount the tanks, he could have at least made an effort to ask what fish I was planning to keep or what area I was planning to put the tanks. He could have showed an interest in the hobby in general. Perhaps he could have offered delivery, or promoted the quality of his tank supplier. Oh well, lots of places to order tanks and supplies. Dr's Foster and Smith comes to mind. :nilly::wall::nutkick::arapaimag:mwave:

there are a lot of people that bash these stores on here. if you dont like it dont go there. Most people know not to expect much from the employees. Most big chain pet shops will not entertain making deals besides the sales that are already going on. It's just the way they do business. It will never change. I dont like it, I dont agree, but I shop there still and will never expect anything but that.

No offense to OP but im honestly so tired of hearing all these "petsmart is a bad store" threads.

We all know that they dont have the best selection or service, if you dont like them, dont shop there.

Petsmart will obviously not make any deals for you, they are a large corporation and make plenty of money; they could care less about one customer.

If you want deals, you have to go to locally owned fish stores, where every customer counts.

I work at a LFS and I used to work at petco, we were allowed to give no discounts without coupons etc.

This is the stupidest thing I've read. You really expect a person to spend a ton of money for a college degree and work at a retail chain store?:screwy:

I think maybe the one who needs to do some research and learning is yourself.

I do not expect anyone who gets a job at a pet store to go to college, but if you want to be the MANAGER and make marketing and sales decisions that benefit the business, then that would be a good suggestion for course study. If a manager only makes $25,000.00 a year, then yes I am expecting a little too much, but if the manager makes $70,000.00 plus bonuses, then he should fully understand his business.

I did not realize that this topic had been discussed on here to the point that no one has an interest anymore. I should have done a few searches.

My bad..

i really don't know. my petsmart is good, the people know what theyre talking about for the most part and the fish are fairly cheap. 6in oscars are only $15, which is cheap around here from what ive seen. they cant bump prices because its a chain store so its understandable.

however, i shop more at my local petco. why? well ill tell you why. their staff is more long term. for them, its not a high school job. most of them have been in the hobby of kepping animals, whether it be reptiles, birds, fish, or small animals for a long time. Their variety is much more diverse than petsmart. Dont get me wrong, its not as good as a private owned lfs but its better. petsmart always has the same thing, petco gets in some different stuff every week.

if i could shop at a private owned lfs, trust me i would. there was a good one down the street from me house, but it got closed down because the owner got into drugs and started dealing so thats not good. but the nearest lfs to that is a 20min drive away and my parents arent driving me 20min so i can get fish stuff. it really sucks. anyone on the ma/ri border on here, OPEN A LFS YOULL MAKE A TON

I agree. People who run big all fish stores like Aquarium Adventure? It makes sense that people who work for a company like that would know a thing or two about fish. I do agree though that the manager should know how to make a sale, but that goes for any manager in any store. Expecting a Petsmart manager to be a fish expert is a little much though

He does have a point tho. not on the college thing, no ones going to college to make minimum wage, but they should at least have to take a crash course in zoology aand marine biology
