Thats funny I just had a request for shell dwellers the other day for the first time. Now that our availibility of fish has increased I will try and get them. We cary a decent amount of dwarf cichlids such as rams already. I have had to refuse the sale of many an Oscar to someone who wants to put it in a 10gal tank.

i don't know if you have any influence over what dry goods/ plants are sold as well, but if you do, I would setup a iwagumi style layout and sell eco-complete, and some of those exotic mosses Amano is offering now. Everybody is gonna want a planted tank after that. That means more lights, plants, expensive substrate, and fish are gonna get sold. You could do it big or small. I would imagine a 55 or 75 would make a great display.

I still will not buy any thing from petco in till they produce proper information on all the fish they sale. I can see it now....

RTC (red tail cat fish)
tank size: 55gal
food: flakes
Location: Makong river system
Tank mates: all

pointing out his spelling mistakes isn't helping anyone, if he and the corporate chain pet stores are trying to make a change for the better why are you deliberately putting them down? "Rome wasn't made in one day."

If it is part of your group the store in Poughkeepsie N Y really needs some intelligent people, had a tsn labeled as a lima and when I discreetly pointed out the error I was gruffly informed that I was mistaken. They really got P O ed when I said one of the iguanas was dead as it hung upside down from the screen top..
Good luck with the new program.

You might know what your talking about, But Petco and Petsmart and other corporate company has put a pretty good hit on the aquatic collector. Like the info they give, like the filters they should use, like the food they should eat, tank size, tank mates, where the fish are from, the PH the fish is use to, etc. All I'm saying is that if you can produce quality people to work the the stores then more power to you. I just want to walk in the store and say " My fish has a cut on it's head" and not get a bunch of jibba jabba about "oh, you need rid ich and some lime juice to raise you PH to 8.0 and drop the temp to 60 degrees because parasites can't live in that kind of cold".

Man, if your going into petco and asking for advice....then your getting what you deserve:duh:

i'm in wichita, kansas. the petco stores here have a poor selection of fish and i usually have to go hunt down the fish department attendant on duty. i don't buy fish from petco. i usually go there for supplies, only. i must admit, your nemisis, petsmart has you beat. they have a larger selection and they usually do have an attendant on duty. they are also eager to assist their customers. i think petco has major customer service issues. please don't take my comments as me bashing petco. i'm just being honest. i look forward to this new program spreading across the nation, to your other stores. do you know which cities will be included? you stated that 30 stores were targeted.

Thats what Im used to seeing too but when I came back to jacksonville the Petco here is miles ahead of the others Ive seen. Their fish selection is still bland as hell but they are the only place for 20 miles or so that sells sinking carnivore pellets.

As far as stock I would probably just drop anything like Pacus, Oscars and Irridescents. It always makes me sad to see them in little store tanks and know that whatever home they go to might be even worse. Try stocking cool fish that stay small.

We don't have petco where I live, but I can tell you this. Petsmart is the worst place to buy fish and supplies and also the worst place to get advice I have ever seen.

if you are going to sell africans, i say get a big show tank of them and get some really nice rock work in there. maybe use some tahitian black moon sand so the colors really pop out and use a black background. get some nice looking lake malawi peacocks or some nice mbuna. you could really stand out doing this since you cannot find a nice african show tank in many LFS anymore. they truly are stunning...... definitely beats the oscars in most show tanks. i'd get some trumpet snails too and help to educate people how beneficial they can be to all tanks but especially planted since they help "aerate" the substrate
