I'm STILL curious though, if any of the Petcos in MY area will become a part of this program. Do you at least have a list of cities for these 30 or so stores that are going through this change as well? Albeit , none of the other 30 Aquatics Managers from the other stores have come on here yet, and also expressed their interest for info as you have, but I'm guessing that there's at least 29 other stores scattered throughout the country that could also use this advice, and knowledge too., right? Any info on whether we can expect a store in our area to be a part of this program would be GREATLY APPRECIATED... Thanks again.

Also, do you plan on stocking Wild Species of Bettas, (which can subsequently be housed communally) or are you guys content with just killing thousands of Splendens by putting them into 5 oz. cups? I've NEVER understood this??? I would absolutly LOVE nothing more than to be able to get a Macrostoma pair and not have to pay nearly $100 just for shipping and "Trans shipping" fees. Again, the very best of luck to you.

Ben.
I will try to find a list of stores for you. As for the wild Bettas I will check my order list. I am personaly opposed to bettas in 5oz cups I have told them to order less bettas so we will not have so much overstock and they will not be in those containers too long but so far no luck.

I've had people at my LFS give me wrong information, while at PetSmart they were honest and just said they didn't know; idiots are everywhere.

People need to give airborne82 a break. He's trying to improve the stores presentation, stock, and he can refuse sales to anyone. It's not like once he starts carrying more 'exotic' fish, that people are going to flock in, buy them, and then kill them with their tiny tanks and horrible water quality. If they want one, they can just go to a LFS and lie to them instead. Quit putting this down just because he works for a big chain store.

A couple things you have probably thought of; 'err on the side of caution when putting down the most accurate max size of fish and min size of tank. Don't sell fish bowls, at least not small ones. Only sell Goldfish and Bettas to people who can actually care for them, not just keep them alive. Maybe make some sort of informational posters about fish and fish keeping, like things(words/pictures) about how to not keep fish), general information on feeding, maintenance, a even about some common diseases. Even though you can refuse sales, I still wouldn't keep things like Pacu, ID Sharks, and even maybe some of the larger, more sensitive(physically) Goldfish. Don't over crowd the feeder tanks too much, and keep them clean!

pointing out his spelling mistakes isn't helping anyone, if he and the corporate chain pet stores are trying to make a change for the better why are you deliberately putting them down? "Rome wasn't made in one day."

I have been keeping fish for a while. On and off for 13 years (due to jobs and moving) but in that 13 years, i have not seen a change in petco, petsmart and any other corporate chain. So, if they do have well educated people that are working in the fish department, then more power to them.

Man, if your going into petco and asking for advice....then your getting what you deserve:duh:
Didn't ask for advice. Was just getting rid-ich. And the the little fish hepler said "That doesn't work.....Stress coat works better". Had to draw the line somewhere.

Thank you VERY MUCH... I hope to be lucky enough to have one of our stores here to be a part of this program. One thing about Betta Splendens, is that the females can almost always be housed in a sorority type of tank (like you see w/ female Guppys), and if more customers saw Bettas in 20-30 gallon tanks at the store, then they might be more likely to keep them in similar quarters at home. This could at least prevent the unnecessarry death of a % of the females at least.

As for the males, divided 10-20 gallon tanks are still better than those damn cups... I'm assuming that room is a concern as well, but when was the last time you had to tell someone, "Sorry we'vre out of Bettas currently, you can check back in a few days". I'm guessing almost NEVER, because when they are presented as they ae in 5 oz. cups they tend to be more of an impulse buy, and will be treated as such unfortunately. When quality Bettas are housed in divided aquariums of larger sizes, they are often seen by the customer as more than just "one of those fish in the cups by the front counter". It certainly couldn't hurt if you did have the room for such an upgrade.

I am very pleased though to see that you've taken the time to actually make conditions better, by trying to learn from contemporaries here on these forums. This speaks VOLUMES to your commitment to the fish, and it's refreshing to see the "bottom line" put on the back burner for a while, and quality, becoming the real focus. GREAT JOB.

Ben.

First off I think That its great that Petco Is trying to get in better fish. But I Think that you should stay away from arow's rct tsn pacu and the like. 90% of these fish wont last 6 months in a small tank. And there alredy so common that we really dont need another pet store selling huge fish to people with a 29 gallon tank. So instead get smaller fish. African butterflyfish are like mini arows. ect ect Try searching the "end all mini monster thead" on this fourm. There load's of small preds and the like in it.

ok srry the rant is over

I have to make a comment on this

I picked up some of my monster fish from chain stores simply because no one else had access, something about buying power.

For example for the first time ever I found a mbu puffer here in regina at the petland! Suffice it to say that puffer is now in my tank.

I think that there is a growing movement of people getting larger tanks tanks to the internet explosion of knowledge distribution.

Personally Airborne, I admire what you're doing! and i wish i lived close to your petco, every time i went into the one i live near, im never helped (even when im the only one in the WHOLE store) i had to physically jump into their walking path to stop them! and after asking the two associates, I realized why they avoid asking for help, its just a job to them, not a passion. to hear about what you're doing makes me wonder why all of them can't get overhauled. keep up the good work, and i would visit your store if i could :)

I just want to walk in the store and say " My fish has a cut on it's head" and not get a bunch of jibba jabba about "oh, you need rid ich and some lime juice to raise you PH to 8.0 and drop the temp to 60 degrees because parasites can't live in that kind of cold".

Did i say i walked in petco and ask for advice? I like to go to a store that is dedicated to aether fish, reptiles, frogs, and so forth and they know there stuff.
