Today I decided to stop into Petco and grab a versa top for a 20 gallon long. I was farther away from home visiting a friend and thought it would be convenient to stop by Petco since it was sorta nearby.

Well I was wrong. I get all the way home to open the box and find a busted up versa top. The glass was all cracked and it looked used. What happened was it must of been a return that Petco put back on the shelf.

Anyway, I go to the Petco more closer to my house which is still kinda far. They tell me I can not return it there, that I must returned damaged products to the original store of purchase.

So I make a trip all the way back to the original store. I tell the guy at the register I am returning this product cause it's damaged. He opens it up and then starts acting all funny then calls over this other employee. They start asking me questions about " where is the original box?" I tell them this is how I got it. They were trying to act as if I busted it up. And they said the box would be more beat up. I told them look at the stuff inside it is all dirty and used. I explain that I feel that a returned product was put back on the shelf.

They get on the little phone and call some guy up from the aquatic section. They bring over a new versa top the same kind I bought to the front and they are all examining it and talking amongst themselves. Meanwhile, they are ringing up other customers and making me stand by the check out area the whole time.

Finally they told me they could not return it. They never gave me an explanation why. I am absolutely pissed. I have never been treated so unprofessional in my life. I actually thought the woman the cashier originally called over was the manager but I am not so sure. I didn't even look at name tags to see who was a manager or not. I was too embarrassed and got out of there. I do remember 2 of their names. And what really pisses me off is I wasted about a 1/4 tank of gas doing all the driving and almost 2 hours of my time.

I am gonna be calling up their corporate office tomorrow.

Yeah they ever were telling me " You didn't open it up and check it before buying it?"

Who the hell thinks to do that? It's their screw up. All of them were pretty young too, none over 25 yrs of age. By the way they acted I don't think any of them were a manager. Maybe a manager was not even working at the time. Maybe they were too afraid to return it because of the managers absence. I left cause I was pretty embarrased. There was a line of customers and they were making like a big scene out of it.

And then I ask the woman, " So are you gonna return it?" She says in a smart *** tone " Nope, sorry" With this smart *** facial expression too. I just grabbed it and told myself, " we'll see, who wins"

You should have thrown it lol. I would have. Done it before so yeah lol. Or bring other customers into the argument to make the employees feel like asses. Done that too.

Should just go berserk and destory all the tanks there with a sledgehammer

Unbelievable. I wouldn't give up man, push them all you have to.

I had the exact same thing happen with a shotgun from Wal-Mart years ago. I got home, opened the box, and here was this old wore out Mossberg pump. My immediate reaction was "Man, I am screwed". But, after calling a manager first, I had no trouble changing it out.

It's too bad you're going to be out the time and gas...but, sometimes it's worth it just to set the situation right. Good luck and let us know how things went. A boycott of all Petcos by members of MFK may be in the future :) lol

Good luck!

I used to work at PetCo, I know I know.
Even though I was around 25 myself, I was a manager in the aquatic section. It sucks that this happened to you, I will tell you that I always took care of my customers (especially in the aquatic section), and this would never have been an issue.
NO ONE really opens boxes to check products. It's not "buyer beware" these are supposed to be new items, assumed new out of the box. Definitely go to corporate, or just go to another PetCo if you have patience.

BTW - MFKers would have loved the PetCo I worked at as the aquatic section was brand new at the time and I would frequently purchase cichlids, marine, and other FW fish that were not on "the list" of things to buy :) It was like a candy store for me when ordering, but I always sold the fish I ordered, even though the store manager freaked and banned me from ordering, lol. The ban was lifted once he saw that all the fish I ordered were sold and there was minimal loss, hahaha.

Little tip about PetCo moving forward...they fed EVERYTHING "Tropical Flakes"!! Everything, as in Puffers, Triggers, Oscars, etc. I had to cost out all the special foods, and you know what?...LESS FISH DIED! That and my frequent, voluntary water changes. I miss making a difference :(

Sorry for the hijack - good luck, call corporate, and get their names if you didn't, maybe the employee # is on the receipt. That is BS customer service for a $10-$15 top, BS in ANY industry.
Let us know what happens

I am currently working at petco (reptile specialist) and that sort of thing would never happen at my store. We take in some really ridiculous returns that I do not agree with at all but the managers feel it is better than dealing with a customer who calls corporate....so you need to call corporate. Also... if there was really NO manager there that day then someone is getting fired because there HAS to be a manager in the store at all times
There should be a corporate number to call on the petco website somewhere and if you don't see it just let me know I'll get it from work.
You are definitely not in the wrong here, you should be able to return and exchange that top. Hell at our store... you can pretty much return ANYTHING as long as it is in our inventory... we have gotten **** without receipts that was obviously a little more than used and still take it back... it's ridiculous....

I had one guy that would come in every week with stuffed toys he bought for his dog.
Before I started there, he always wanted to exchange them for new ones when his dog tore them up.
He got away with it for a while, and when I started, I told him that "this is the last time we would do this" -- He came in next week and I told him that toys are meant to be chewed and doesn't mean they are defective, LOL.

So the fact that they did that boggles me even more.

Don't call corporate, call and ask to speak to the stores head manager (won't be there everyday). They will actually care.

Also, returning things from one store to a different one (even if they're both Petcos) is sometimes not allowed, but it seems like you never even got to that point.
