I mean have you folks seen the combination of fish on this site alone-now if a PetSmart employee sold a Bala and a GT to someone who just started out in the trade then I could understand-but that's where the employee should ask the customer how long have you had fish or why do you think this combo would work? Myself for example once I started rambling on about my tanks and experience the guy wanted me just to buy the fish and shut up! LOL!

i saw threads abt ppl moaning abt petsmart/walmart not caring abt fishes.....now complain about them caring too much
what's next? complain about them not caring less or more than usual ?

i agree 100%, i work at deathco and don't like the company however i do like the fact that we have the power to refuse to sale to anyone whom we believe(with good reason, not just because we don't like the person) will not provide a proper home. almost every day i work there i get to deal with some idiot who wants to put incompatible fish together or fish into a tank that is far to small(an associate sold a guy a pair of 3~4" koi without asking anything about where they'd be kept or giving any information, he came back the next day to get a 2.5g bowfront for them) stop complaining because somebody didn't want to sell you a fish, if its that big a deal go to another store or come back later when you don't have fish in the truck and talk to them. just because your on a forum or know a bit about fish doesn't necessarily make you more knowledgeable than the person bagging your fish(training sucks but you sometimes find people with a lot of experience) you aren't exactly wearing a shirt with a list of your fish-keeping experiences and knowledge or have "certified fish expert" stamped on your forehead, for all we know you could be the idiot we get all the time who thinks his "huge" 40g tank is enough for a pair of oscars, a blood parrot and half a dozen africans and gets offended when i inform him that he can't keep as many fish in his tank as the picture on the box his tank came in.

Haha I like the idea of wearing a list of our knowledge on our uniform! Seriously!

Ok Ok two guys come into petsmart tonight and immediately say to their other friend dont talk to that F***in B**** obviously loud enough for me to hear . . . just cuz I told him his "HUGE" tank (55 gal) was not big enough for the ten oscars he already had and no I would not sell him another one plus a needlefish, a few days before. So please excuse the sometimes grumpy and sometimes picky petsmart/petco employees.

Ugghh nasty smelly big men who think they know better then me . . . if I was a foot taller . . . they would have had another thing coming . . .

so ive read all the comment on here and i can see both sides to the discussion !
the only thing that i would like to add is the complete lack of knowlege the people working in my local petsmart are !
im not exagerating when i say that last time i was there the staff that was helping me didnt know the fish she was selling (i asked for an ABF and she asked me to point it out as she had no idea what it was !!)
and then to top it off she would only sell me 1 gourami as in her knowlege you cannot keep a pair in the same tank as they are agressive !
im sorry but at this point i could not hold the laughter in and had to leave fishless !
im sure this is not the case for all the shops in the chain but more care should be taken as to who is serving people with fish and they shoul be adequately trained ! it just gives the company such a bad rep for such a silly mistake !

depending on the gourami, they can be very aggressive towards eachother(especially when you get morons trying to put 3 into a 20g) i always try to educate the people as best i can, especially when they're new fish keepers, however i can't really refuse to sell people fish for the reason that they are doing a fish cycle, its too hard to successfully explain to a newbie how to properly do a fishless cycle and they end up just coming back in a few days after a few WC(because the water looked dirty) so their parameters look ok and buying the fish, enstead i explain both options and that if they are going to do a fish cycle, only put in a few fish and do lots of very frequent WC for the first month or so

these were 1.5 inch blue (3 spot) gourami of which i have 6 living quite comfortably in my 200.
i can see the reasoning but they make u fill out the questionare which states the main criteria ie tank volume and how long its been running but they still ignore it !
im sorry but why ask people these questions if your not going to listen to the answers ?
places like pets at home are far to corprate and anal.
theres literally 5 mins away another privately owned lfs and the guys in there will go out of their way to chat to you about your set up and will point out fish and give you 100% of the infomation to keep them successfully !
needless to say i have never been back to P A home since finding this other store !

In england we have pets at home and maidenhead aquatics are the 2 big chain stores, maidenhead is great and ive never been to a bad store but pets at home:yuck: the people know nothing when they ask you to fill out the form they are only familiar with the fish they sell and the common names so if you want to buy a goldfish to live with an oscar then they wont sell it to you but if you buy a goldfish to live with astronotus ocellatus then its fine cos they dont know what it is.

And yes private stores are far nicer as the people in there keep fish and know what they are talking about you can talk to them about their tank setups and what they have and more often than not if you go there often you will get a discount.
