Petsmart fish??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't generally shop at Petsmart because I like to support the LFS, but I have bought fish from them in the past w/o trouble . . . if they had a more diverse selection I might try them, but really they don't have anything special there

I find it varies so greatly from store to store depending on who works there that generalizations may be a starting point but look at the fish first. I've Been in awful lfs's and great petsmarts. All in all it just depends on who's workin there and how well they know their fish and how well they take care of them. There will always be the dummy cashier that gets called over to bag a fish for you but that doesn't mean the "head fish dude(or dudette)" doesn't take care of the fish well.

Hey, not all cashiers are dummies :irked: Some do in fact work in the Fish....Petsmarts are a hit and miss, Petcos are a hit and miss, Walmarts are always miss. I know a couple LFS that are utter idiots compared to Petsmarts...Many Petsmarts have cheap fish, some fish they should sell. some fish they shouldn't (Pacu, ID Cats) So your friend might not like Petsmart or be a PETA member but regardless. Make your own decisions

K- Mart doesn't sell live fish!

I had a petco cashier drop my pleco on the floor! The bag popped holes and stuff.. he was their only large pleco so we took him home and took care of him but we were sooooo upset with that.

BUT not all cashiers are dummies. I worked in retail for a lot of my working life thus far (not anymore) so I am always trying to take the retail guy's side a little bit.

I have bought fish from petsmart, I just try and look for fish that don't look diseased. If there is dead fish floating around in the tank, I will pass. Luckily, there is a fish specialty store around here that has a much bigger selection and great prices.

only gonna say one thing

bristle nose plecos sold as common for $2.99 at walmart

I love going to local pet stores for fish. Most of the time these places hire people that have no knowledge of fish. So when you can feel these people out, you can get some great deals. My last great deal was an albino longfin bushynose pleco. There was a sticker on the tank marked $49.00. On the other side of the glass right next to the sticker was the longfin pleco. I asked the guy "do you have any more longfin plecos?" he said no, but we have regular bushynose's. I asked how much and he said $9.99. I said is that a bushynose? He came over and looked at it and said yes, I said bag it. So he did, when he rang me up I knew there were 2 people there that knew their stuff so I quickly bagged the fish out of sight, paid my $9.99 for a $49.99 fish and left. This happens all the time. When you ask how much a fish is and they know what it is, go back the next day and if that guy isnt there, ask someone else that may not know what it is and more than likely, you will get a deal. This was at Jacks Aquarium in Ohio. Then at the Jacks in KY, I got another $49.99 fish, an Ornate Bichir, CLEARLY marked with the price, I told them, hey I want a senegalis, I pointed at it, then asked how much and 3 tanks over I found the price $7.99, she said $7.99, I said bag it. There are deals out there if you can spot them. Another thing I do is scan all the tanks for unmarked fish, those are deal makers as well.:nilly:

WTF? In your mind, does this practice not equal stealing. You fully admit 100% intentional deception for financial gain.

You are a thief and a serious amoral if you can justify this criminal act. Why don't you just print counterfeit money, and get every passer by to give you two real $5 dollar bills for your counterfeit one. Better yet, you could just take these bills to the LFS and dump them their. If the cashier is not sharp enough to be avoid being scammed into charging the incorrect price for a fish, they will certainly never be able to detect fake money for Pete’s sake.

I am the first to react to this post. Am I the only member of MFK that does NOT see this practice as perfectly moral and on the up and up.

I hope that any believers/ supporters in this practice has Karma stomps a mudhole in your collective backsides and walks em' dry!

I agree, total scammer.

Fine line between getting a good deal and flat out being a thief. IMO you are the latter :thumbsdow
