WTF? In your mind, does this practice not equal stealing. You fully admit 100% intentional deception for financial gain.

You are a thief and a serious amoral if you can justify this criminal act. Why don't you just print counterfeit money, and get every passer by to give you two real $5 dollar bills for your counterfeit one. Better yet, you could just take these bills to the LFS and dump them their. If the cashier is not sharp enough to be avoid being scammed into charging the incorrect price for a fish, they will certainly never be able to detect fake money for Pete’s sake.

I am the first to react to this post. Am I the only member of MFK that does NOT see this practice as perfectly moral and on the up and up.

I hope that any believers/ supporters in this practice has Karma stomps a mudhole in your collective backsides and walks em' dry!

i dont know about walmart or k mart but i have got petsmart fish. they turned out ok. i dont like petsmart cuz i always think they're clueless as it comes to fish, but when i saw a jag recommended for a 30 gallon tank i had to get it and put it in a proper home haha

Will Petsmart keep your fish for you while you move, or during a power outage? Will they loan you a filter or new lights when yours bites the dust and you don't get paid till Friday? Will they buy your fry, or even let you trade for store credit?
A decent LFS has many advantages over a chain store. I've seen a few "mom&pop stores" I'd never buy fish from.
I'm lucky in that we have a local forum and the owners and employees of the good LFS's are active members. They have regular sales and forum members usually get special discounts.

You can buy from chain stores, but they will probably have less fish to choose from.

Examine all the fish to make sure none are diseased.

My convict came from petsmart, he's doing fine.

its really up to you. you buy the fish at petsmart- you help your friends have a job there in some sense so its really up to you where you buy your fish-

I would support the LFS by buying my fish there personally than a chain store. But without the chain store i'll be out of expensive dog food that I save bundles of money buying from than the local pet shop so I just support both.

Thanks, lots of info, but unfortunately I learned the hard way yesterday. 5 days ago I purchased 3 clown loaches from Petsmart to keep the 2 I already have company. I didn't think they looked as healthy as my fish, but my kids were screaming and i didn't pay close enough attention (pissed at myself). Found my large loach dead at the bottom of my tank, I had it for 3 years. I was looking for possible resons and noticed white dots on the smaller loaches, yeah they have ich. I was able to catch the 3 of them and started treatment on the fish and my tank. I lost 1 of the smaller ones today and it doesn't look so good for the other 2. I don't have another aerated tank to keep them in so they are in a large bowl on my counter. I really don't know what to do to save these guys, any info would be great. Needless to say, i went back to Petsmart and told the fish dude they sold me sick fish and now I need the treatment meds for them and tank. I had to pay for that, apparently you need to bring the fish back to the store to prove illness or death and these guys are too stressed to be transported back and forth. Sucks!:(
Oh yeah, I agree that's stealing and pretty immoral.

I've try not to buy fish from retail/chain pet stores, but when that's all that's around, you do what you have to do. Fish or no fish, you decide.

I have a pleco and a Koi from Petco. The Pleco is Great, and has NO problems. The Koi however I believe was stunted from being in such a small tank. He's now happily swimming in 1500 gallons nice and warm in my basement from the winter elements with lots of friends. :)

I have some tetras, 2 clown loaches, and 5 zebra loaches from a local pet store called "Petz Unlimited". I don't like the store simply because they still sell mill puppies, but I LOVE their fish selection- even though, they are pricey on some things.

I Just bought 5 clown loaches from WalMart. The ONLY reason was because they were $1 cheaper than the pet place in Lancaster, and it saved me an hour drive. They were all very healthy looking. They also just upgraded their fish department. One however died because he was dropped on the floor from the employee handling fish.

But over all, I am happy. And I will continue buying fish where ever they are pleasing to me.

I will not purchase fish from Petsmart up here. Their tanks are disguisting. :irked:

he should not be boasting about ripping the store off. but...... if the store hired competent employees with a basic knowledge of fish, these mistakes would not happen.

ICH is a slow killer. Always thoroughly look over your fish daily. And when you introduce new fish into your tank, ALWAYS do an ICH treatment. It has saved my ass plenty of times. :) Or have a separate tank, and QT your new fish for 2 weeks before adding them to a your established tank.

in september an employee at petco dropped 50 feeders onto the ground... they had to kill them all due to contamination. also, when i first set up my aquarium and didn't know much about it, they advised my 55g aquarium could hold around 6-8 fish that were 4-6" long or hold 5 fish that are 7" long max... good advice to you? the only good advice they gave was to not mix aggressive and non agressive fish, which is common sense
